I think of Sean Penn's win for Mystic River as a "hey, let's give him an Oscar already" moment.* I don't think it's a particularly good Penn performance. He's outstanding in Milk and At Close Range.

*Also Kate Winslet for The Reader, but that really is one of her best performances.

Other such perfs include Paul Newman's in The Color of Money, Al Pacino's in Scent of a Woman, and Susan Sarandon's in Dead Man Walking. Ironic that she should win for a movie that was Sean Penn's showcase.

There was some of that for Geraldine Page for The Trip to Bountiful except she was so good in the movie that she would probably have won even if she'd already had an Oscar.

Yeah, I don't really think that one counts.

Yes, but how perfect that she won for her performance, which was subtle as well as intense, beautiful as well as stark, skillful even as she - in character - fumbled her way through a difficult situation. I loved her in that movie, and think she is an underused actress.

She is also a great actress. One of my favorite Sarandon performances, and one she should have won for, is Bull Durham. Seen it? If not, do. If yes, see it again. (I think I will, soon.)

Probably shouldn't admit to this, but no, I haven't seen Bull Durham. But you're right, no time like the present. Except there are a bunch of films out tomorrow that I have to rent...then again, I can just add this one to the pile. It's got to be a week's rental, so I'll have time.

I love Sarandon's voice, among other things. I wish she'd take on another meaty role. Though she was deliciously campy in Enchanted...

Bull Durham is where Sarandon met Tim Robbins, and also serves as the major exhibit in the case for Kevin Costner. He is magnificent, and he and Sarandon have fantastic chemistry.

It's the movie that turned her into a star rather than a somewhat familiar actress.

Does anyone remember Sarandon with Catherine Deneuve in "The Hunger?" Cool vampire movie.

I hated the book so I had no inclination to see the movie.

Had no idea it was based on a book.

I remember David Bowie in that. I always felt he should have made more movies--such an intriguing character.
