I was indeed happy to hear that Obama had put the brakes on the Bush directives. I was hoping that would be one of his first moves.

A display of newspaper front pages around the world--

cool -- I figured Pauline was a religious reference. And tho' I have read the 4 Gospels, I don't remember much about St. Paul at the moment.

that's because the pauline epistles are not in the gospels. they follow them and THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES in standard new testament order...

they are well worth reading even tho carro is right that they have been the grist of mediocre pastors time immemorial...

Wasn't Paul the one who was against the fun things in sex or am I thinking of another killjoy?

Paul was the guy who said that women should be subservient to their husbands. That never went over very well with my mother, or me.

Of course, I've learned that a lot of "Paul's letters" were written by other people--one of whom was probably a disciple named Priscilla. It's interesting how every organized religion enforces sexism through the centuries, regardless of the original teachings.

After a bad fall on the ice and a scheduled 4-hour power outage this morning (in -20ºC weather!), I had lots of catching up to do! But it WAS fun to see everyone spelling President Obama's first name incorrectly wayyyyyyy back when...(except for me until billy corrected me and I apologized for the misspelling, yet - geesh!)

For the record (since we're pinning down times of postings), I posted that the President was already President before he took the oath, AS I watched it and CNN mentioned it...so there.

He said both sexes should be subserviant to the other. The second half of that is always forgotten.

I've bookmarked the new site--I have never done that. I watched the proceedings with tears streaming down my face, and clapping my hands. I loved it. I thought the speech was excellent. I didn't hate Rick Warren's invocation--though I loved loved loved Lowery's benediction.

I was in D.C. last September, it was so exciting to see all the landmarks again, thronged with humanity. Humanity.

Question for anyone who can answer: Clinton was just confirmed as Sec'y of State, so that position's filled. But there's no Attorney General yet, and those hearings have been postponed for a week (at the request of the Republicans and to the ire of Pat Leahy). So, what happens if an AG is needed? Is there someone in place for all those unconfirmed positions?

Sometimes the previous office-holder will stay on until his or her successor is confirmed, sometimes the deputy will take over temporarily. At the beginning of the Clinton administration, there were temporary people in for months, some of them appointed by the first Bush.

There was some speculation on the Volokh Conspiracy that for a few minutes yesterday Condaleeza Rice was acting President since the Speaker and President pro tempore have to resign to take the office, and Obama hadn't taken his oath. I think someone confirmed that Joe Biden took his oath before noon.

Most likely, Obama took the oath earlier and retook it at the ceremony. That would solve the problem of someone shooting the Chief Justice.

Is anyone aware of this?

Rush Limbaugh told his listening audience, "I hope (Obama) fails." What a ridiculous asshole.

i make it a habit to read the foreign press (actually, more to maintain language skills) but i have to pass on to you the concomitant exhilaration of the EU nations at the election of obama...

even the paris daily, LE MONDE (about as right wing as you're gonna get in france) is ecstatic and they're no fans of america. the italian and german print press are equally thrilled as are, of course, the brits...

the prospects for rapproachment with our (frankly, former) allies leaves me somewhat giddy. we're (started) baaack, babeee...

Rick Sanchez covered Limbaugh on his show today - the consensus is that Limbaugh isn't worth a shred of credibility and can exercise his free speech all he likes, but as he is also going to be affected by anything Obama does, he's behaving in the most anti-American way possible. He's a blow-hard.

Thanks for the explanation, Syd. I tend to get curious about stuff not covered on any of the news shows!

I can't stsnd that show. I watch TV to get news and opinions from pros, not to read any and every blogger who writes that guy.
