John Woo: slo-mo action scenes set in churches, a gun in each hand, pidgeons flying, male comraderie.
Paul Verhoeven: excessive sex&violence, smooth long takes with a camera.
Hal Hartley: Long Island / New York, deadpan performences, absurd dialogues.
DW Griffith: lotsa parallel editing, saving the damsel in distress with last minute rescue.
And hello everyone! |

Hello, Melis. How's Turkey? Shane says "hi".
Keaton: Dangerous stunts that he makes look nonthreatening.
Lloyd: Dangerous stunts that he makes look life-threatening.
Chaplin: No dangerous stunts, but he still looks like his life is threatened. |

Kieslowski. In the ten movies of the Decalogue, there is a brief appearance by a lonely man, observing but not speaking. He has been compared to some characters in Greek classics who observe everything that is going on, but have no influence on the course of events. I don't recall if there is a similar character in the Tricolor movies. |

Tarantino: influence of Asian action flix plus his own experience of working in a video rental store, writes his own scripts, lots of violence, violence treated as art form, use of 4-letter words
Spielberg: master of manipulating audience, use of sentiment & sentimentality, themes involving childhood; fascination with action-adventure, Holocaust & World War II, and science-fiction
Bogdanovich: romantic involvements with blond leading ladies, nostalgia for classic films, honed his craft as an actor & writer; interest in genre such as musical, screwball comedy, etc. |

Kieszlowski: In the Blue/Red/White Trilogy, there's an old lady trying to deposit a bottle to a recycling box. Each leading character from the three films responds differently, if I remember correctly.
"Paul Verhoeven: excessive sex&violence, smooth long takes with a camera." was supposed to be "with a moving camera". Duh.
Turkey's great, I'm really glad to be back here. I've been back for about 1,5 years now, and was gone for equally long, but still... |

Godard:

Fellini:
fascination with clowns and circus folk; the circus as a metaphor for life; memorable Nino Rota scores; actress/wife as icon; delves into absurdity, irony, and ugliness
Antonioni:
known for distinctive visual style in both b & w and color which conveys bleakness and alienation of storylines

gloomy, dark, forboding films both visually & in terms of scripts; explores failed relationships & dysfunctional families |

Zhang Yimou:
Focus on tragic heroes.
Fate v. individual choice.
Main characters are usually underdogs who stand up for themselves and mount doomed rebellions against more powerful foes/forces.
Interest in history and other eras (this has long been a Chinese method of avoiding censorship).
Significant use of the color Red. |

Alan Smithee:
- Of the "Angry" school of directors
- A bit uneven from film to film with his use of symbols and directoral style
- Seems to have a hatred of editors. |

Kevin Smith: Hip humor, stock company, incompetant camera work.
Kurosawa: integrity and extreme dedication to duty; light reflected in eyes (starting with Ikiru; I'd never really noticed it myself), Mifune and/or Shimura.
Miyazaki: beautiful traditional-style animation, ecological themes, young female protagonists, strange but benign creatures. |

Also: Kurosawa used the same art director and musical director on most of his films.
Cameron: Action films mostly from the woman's point of view, self-sacrificing heros, really big machines. |
