Raging Bull

God, I hope he has another film in him.

I think the only Scorsese film I've liked was Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.

But I agree wholeheartedly with Mo.
I really enjoyed My Voyage to Italy, where Marty chronicles and analyzes post-war Italian cinema. His Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies is also quite good.

Seems he's working on a George Harrison Documentary now, among other projects.

I am not particularly fond of his music films.

I fell asleep during New York New York-- my snoring didn't bother the other audience members as they were asleep too.

I rented it and made it to about the 45 minute mark before giving up in boredom.

Casino is probably my favourite of the ones I've seen.

I really hated that film. I think the Minelli character had a lot to do with it. Thereafter, when she made NYNY her signature song, I developed a fervent dislike for her. And it wasn't the song, per se. I love Frank's version. Funny how sometimes we can't just forget a lousy movie.

But it is cool that he used Georgie Auld as the bandleader. I like Auld's big band from the 40's. Songs like the excellent Seems Like Old Times; I've Got A Right To Know; 100 Years From Today (even one Auld version with Sarah Vaughan, though the Glen Gray version is even better), etc.

Very true. I greatly admire what he's done for film preservation.

I think Scorsese's dedication to film preservation and his general "good guy" reputation is what ultimately won him Hollywood's affection and the Oscar. I don't think it's his work. That's not a condemnation of his work, just an evaluation of "the biz."

This orgy of damning Scorsese with faint praise is somewhat annoying to me. He's one of the two greatest living American film directors--IMO, the other being Spielberg--and deserves respect even for his flops, which are ambitious and interesting.

He may be among the greatest living. But what does that say? Sorry, GoodFellas wasn't more than an average movie by any techincal or psychological standards. He'd done it all before, and done it with more imagination and intensity.

Nor is he challenging himself. I don't think he has since Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, which was a genuine stretch if not a completely successful movie.
