whitney, I meant.

Well, that'll teach me not to post before previewing.

marilyn: That's very flattering, thank you. I used to be the purple light of a summer night in Spain, but then I faded.

The nicest thing I can say about Mr. Winkler and Mr. Cocks' Porter portmanteau was that selections from the soundtrack made a dandy accompaniment to the Grove's dancing waters show.

You're the top! You're a Ritz hot toddy.
You're the top! You're a Brewster body.
You're the boats that glide on the sleepy Zuider Zee,
You're a Nathan Panning, You're Bishop Manning, You're broccoli.
You're a prize, You're a night at Coney,
You're the eyes of Irene Bordoni,
I'm a broken doll, a fol-de-rol, a blop, But if, Baby, I'm the bottom, You're the top.

Just in case you never heard this verse! Very Happy

Back to work, Marj. Now! *Ugh*

Whit -

I can tell you from experience, once you are free from them for good, you will want to run screaming from the mountain tops for joy!

I quit 22 years ago. Now and then, I take a drag from someone else's cig and wonder what I ever saw in them. Yuck!

Me, there was an iron link with smoking and drinking. I gave up booze to brake the link. When I no longer craved a smoke, I went back to drinking, and I'm living happily ever after.

I miss The Joe Franklin Radio Show..(off the air since June), he played these tunes regularly. I did a pile of dishes for "the expert" every Saturday late night to these kinda songs.

Thanx Marj

Thanks Chills,

But I posted that verse in reply to InLA's post, in which her interpolated:
"the purple light of a summer night in Spain," thinking perhaps I wouldn't catch it.

HA! As if!

All the lyrics are Cole Porter's. What a mind this man possessed!

And, don't get me started on Joe Franklin! Evil or Very Mad

Whitney,

My post was meant to be read with a heavy helping of irony. What I was saying in my own twisted way was, "I'm pleased to see a genuine, articulate film enthusiast join the forum."

But, put like that, don't you think it comes across as a bit wet.

Saw Open Water yesterday. It's a movie that will stay with me for a long, long time. Read Marilyn's very perceptive review and was pleased that she gave the two actors the credit they deserve. Most critics seemed to dismiss their contributions as simply serviceable or less. The simplicity and honesty of their work was integral to the power of this shocking film.

Among all the other obvious strengths of the movie, it is perhaps the most powerful 9/11 metaphor I've yet seen and an unforgettable cautionary tale. "Live each day to the fullest." "Cherish what you have." "Don't take anything for granted." These are truisms that can lose their meaning, but Open Water makes them vivid once again.

Billy,
I agree with you 100%, both re the movie and the truisms you give. They are why the bickering in the water struck me as so sad, when both their lives still hung in the balance and neither they nor we knew what the eventual outcome might be.

But, a little bit out of the spirit of the movie, it also made me wanna go sue the ass off somebody! And if that movie was based on a true story maybe that did happen. I know everybody must have signed iron-clad releases against anything that might happen, but I would still try to sue if I were an affected party. But maybe that's only because I'm from (litigious) New York City, so now I'll stop before I get worked up and start arguing the case.

Maybe, possibly, finally, I'll be seeing Open Water tonight.

I'm such a tease.
