Bale stars in one of the blockbusters of all time, and who gets all the publicity, the Oscar buzz, the TV clips? A dead co-star. Can't blame him for getting smashed, though violence is a bit much.
All this makes me wonder if Heath (before his demise) just MIGHT have been perfect casting as James Dean.

The Visitor - The most satisfying film I've seen so far this year. A really sweet story told through an unusual collection of characters. Definitely garnished with typical Indie-Film touches - the angst-ridden lead, the unrequited love, the muted emotional tone - but it still manages to set a positive mood and end on an almost cathartic note.
Wall-E - While certainly ranking as a Pixar success, which says a lot, there's only so much empathy you can wring from a trash compactor. Wall-E is a fine film with something approaching actual depth, but it's impact will be felt more deeply by the kids playing with their plastic Wall-E toys than by the adults who cast award votes. Wall-E was, for me, a painful reminder of other Pixar friends gone missing, a bittersweet echo of Buzz & Woody.
Four Minutes - In German with English subtitles. The story takes place in a prison, centering around a young woman who happens to be both a violent, convicted murderer and a supremely gifted pianist. An old piano teacher - 'old' as in 'Nazi' old - notices the young woman's talent and makes it her singular mission to elevate this convict and train her for a big competition. It's a relationship tale, a buddy story with a whole tapestry of fabrics between the young student and the old teacher. And yeah, there's a competition looming, one that may or may not happen, but it acts as the piece of cheese at the end of this maze. I've been blown away by most of the recent German films I've seen. This one was a lesser gust of wind but still pretty damn good.
And in case you were curious, I've been around and lurking but really had no life of my own until June. It's only been a month and a half since I've rediscovered a social life, films, regular meals and Nutella. It was work-related shit, nothing more, but man, whatta' pain-in-the-ass late Winter & Spring! Nice to be composing an actual post! |

Lorne--Wow!!! How great to see you back. The Visitor is one of my two favorites from this year. The other is In Bruges. Have you seen that? If not, do. |

Happy to see you Lorne! I'd like to know if you've seen/plan to see In Bruges, too. |

I preferred Ledger's Joker, but then I need to watch No Country For Old Men a few more times. |

Haven't seen In Bruges. Plan to, along with about 30 other "Plan to's". I'm making up some lost ground, but boy am I behind in my filmgoing.
Geez, McBain, when did you wander back here? |

In Bruges was a decent flick. Not great, not bad.
I wandered back around here to troll election discussion. |

Is seagull a new person? Did he/she simply find this site and join up? Has that happened a lot in my absence? |

It does seem that he is indeed a new person. The other recent members we've had sign up have been trying to enhance our sexuality or pharmaceuticals, or both.
Bdswagger's back for the pre-Code forum, but had recent computer problems. |

By the way, Lorne, Billy has become a rabid McCain follower since you left. Please go to the Election forum and see if you can talk him into coming back over to Obama's side. |
