Memento was a selfconcious film. that was about the only thing wrong with it. It sort of basked in it's hook (the screenplay backwards thing) too much to be like a good Japanese supernatural mystery (the kind Kurosawa makes) . When you don't write in enough red meat into your script, people get irritated with your film after a viewing or two. The Classic converse is se7en, which has a cute hook and also stands up to repeated viewings. |

I remember being singularly unimpressed by Memento. |

I thought Memento had interesting characters and great casting. I liked the interspersed b&w segments going forward in time against the color scenes in reverse.
I also like how the reverse chronology placed the viewer in essentially the same unpredictable predicament as the memory impaired lead.
And yes, it had a good sense of humor ("... or, he's chasing me"; beer o'clock and I'm buying; the hotel clerk).
I could pop that film on any time and enjoy it. |

I think Memento is one of those films that one has to be in the right frame of mind to see. I remember a friend who loved it, pushing and pushing me to see it. I found it to be a great bore.
Than another day I re watched. And I enjoyed immensely. Is it a great film? I doubt it. I'd actually have to see it again to be fair. But if you don't take it too seriously, it can be a lot of fun. |

Well I can see where we stand taste/wise. Se7en is a silly piece of dreck. Talk about self conscious.
Memento is a great film, with great performances, a terrific script and if you were bored, you were just too Hollywood conventional. |

Se7en, wasn't without any entertainment value. When Pitt pronounces the singer Sade's name as if she were the Marquis de Sade, that was funny. That was it. |

I've had opposite reactions to movies too. The first time I saw "Women in Love," I thought it was mannered and boring. The second time (okay, at that point I had gotten hooked on Alan Bates), I thought it was one of the great films of all time. The third time, I decided it was a good film but not really one of the greatest.
All three viewings were in movie theaters, by the way, though I do now have it on DVD. |

Yeah I think we have different tastes, but I didn't think memento was a bad movie..just too pleased with itself...
I think memento compares with se7en. I am not endorsing messages in either of them , and no, I don't think se7en was dreck, obviously.
And my film tastes are what they are. it's more important to me that I like the film than people compare their tastes with mine and find me adequate.
If you find such patterns(hollywood conventional etc), however, please point them out, so I can examine it for truth. Historically I've had every possible focus in phases- Hollywood, Indi, European, Japanese, Bollywood ...and counting... |

Why is this in current? Anyway I saw Hellboy II this afternoon. No it isn't the equal of Hellboy. The plot is flat and one note. The visuals are excellent, but you can expect that from the Mexican. The main characters were good and Perlman is the movie as he was in the first. Hellboy II is just a much slighter film than its predecessor. Worth seeing though. Del Toro is getting a little too captivated with his wild creations at the expense of the story. Hey Guillermo! Less is more. |

Again,
that seems to put inexplicit words into my mouth .
I compared se7en and memento because they were both films with a hook(one psychoanalytic, the other religious). I felt that it seemed to me that the former had more emotional/mythical meat in it than the latter, and sometimes movies are designed not to have emotional meat, but in memento, it seemed accidental. So I said, (message apart) se7en succeeded as a screenwriting enterprise better than memento did..and obviously this is true for me.
I don't think either film is Important. |

Sorry, some people think that Se7en is a great film. I apologize for lumping you in with that crowd. Se7en's premise is just laughable. And the psychobabble from Spacey's lips at near the end hammer every nail that might have been missing from the coffin, deeply in.
The movie was an insult to intelligence.
Memento was on the contrary, interesting and clever. I didn't find it too pleased with itself in the least.
Not liking or not thinking Memento is an excellent movie easy for me to forgive. Thinking Se7en is an excellent movie (I'm not referring to you Seagull) is unforgivable in my eyes. |

I agree Gary.
Spoiler - I guess
Was it just me or when we were in the troll market - did you think of the bar scene from Star Wars for just a second. Probably just me. |

thanks for the review, kate!
Mini as it was. I quite liked BB as well and I truly loved PL, it was so inspired and layered - one of my favorites so far.
Love the colors! |
