Great line, Jeremy!

I became a fan of Natalie Portman after her amazing, Oscar-worthy supporting role in last year's Cold Mountain. Anyone dismissive of her ability must see this performance.

Natalie Portman is one of the most erratic actresses in movies. I haven't yet seen Cold Mountain, but her performance in Beautiful Girls is transcendent. Then there's her absolutely awful, inept work in Star Wars and--yes, I know I'm in a minority here--Leon (The Professional). She was also, by all accounts, embarrassingly amateurish in The Seagull in Central Park. She is, however, lovely to look at.

I thought she was ok in The Professional (AKA Leon). I think it is only fair to make allowances for both her age and the rather surreal plot, which must have made it difficult for to ground her performance.

Billy - From what I remember, Portman was quite good in The Professional, though she may have been carried along by Jean Reno's charisma and a great story. I'll have to see that one again.

And how does any actor transcend the comic-book level dialogue of StarWars?

But she was awesome in Cold Mountain. Absofuckinglutely awesome!

Hi, folks, long time no see.

I loved Portman in Beautiful Girls. Forgive the hyperbole, she was
flawless.

Finally caught up with Cold Mountain, a pic I avoided due to trailers, and having had a high regard for the nivel. I was really pleased with the film, and knocked away by Law and Zellie-Kidman grew on me. All this to say, I thought Portman exemplary here too.

So fuck off with your ageist horseshit.

LOL! Sensitive mofo. Like I meant old folk weren't hip enough to enjoy it. No. I'm just saying that the movie is clearly about this specific generation and it would be hard for anybody pre-dating or coming after to appreciate it the same as those that it's aimed at. Like me viewing something like Easy Rider or Reality Bites. I don't get it and I don't think I'm really meant to.

Shannon,
I am really curious about your definition of old folk. It has been a long time since I've heard that population split being used.

And, just as a seditious thought, do you think that maybe old folk can understand the youger generation in a way that the younger generation can't even begin to comprehend (yet). Been there once helps a lot. Old folk, even if not hip, don't necessarily go off to the elephant boneyard when they pass that imaginary line. This is a gentle question; I'm too old to fight Smile And I'm wearing glasses. Cool

I agree, Lorne. Her performance was very good and one that I rather enjoyed.

Makes me curious to see Garden State... plus anyting else she'll be in in the future.

I think our older generation likes to think we are as hip as we always were. In some ways, we are. But I don't think we really can "get" the younger generation any more than our parents "got" us. I think Shannon is dead on with this. I thought Garden State was hopelessly juvenile--but then, that's the point. I'm not where these people are anymore, and I was raised differently and have different ideas about some of the issues they faced. I still don't think it's a very good movie, but I can see how the romance between Portman and Braff could garner young, loyal fans. Portman is very sweet, and Braff has an appealing vulnerability. The acting was very good (except for Braff); it was the script I thought hopeless.

Old folk = anybody older than me. Come on. Statement used in jest. Sheesh, y'all are sensitive.

Sure, I agree with this. But I also think there is a such a thing as generation specificity. I'm not going to "get" a film about a 20 year old living in the '60's, the '70's, the '80's, or the '90's the way a person who actually was a 20 year old living in the '60s, '70's, '80's or 90's will. It's the way it is and I don't see anything "ageist" is saying such.

Did I say this? Did I even imply this? You're reading waaaaaay too much into such an innocent statement.

If your over forty and worried whether your hip or not, then your not. If you don't care whether your hip or not, the chances are your still not hip.
