As it stands now, I plan to see Get Smart, have marginal interest in Zohan, and The Love Guru hasn't registered. Btw, is Zohan suitable for young teenage girls? I've got 4 nieces (ages 11-14).

I'm still waiting for Get Smart Tv shows to be released on Dvd.

I don't think Zohan is suitable for young teenage girls. I'd imagine that their parents would not be pleased. Lots of gross sex jokes, etc. In very poor taste (think "Borat") - but funny. I think it's probably perfect for teenage boys.

Get Smart's pretty suitable. There's a visual gay joke, and that's about all that you might question.

The Love Guru has lots of sex jokes, including penis jokes, so is not suitable.

Kung Fu Panda's totally suitable unless you're a snow leopard or a rhinoceros.

In The Edge Of Love, the new film about the loves and life of Dylan Thomas, Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley have a bath together. I'll leave you with that thought.

Word has it that the film's so-so.

Any uncle who took four nieces to Zohan would end up with (at best) a red face. At worst it might involve an arrest for corrupting a minor. It's that lewd.

Given your description, I'd say the "word's" conclusiob is not possible

I'd say WOW, Rod and billy agree again, except that for anyone to disagree that 4...3...2... is a great movie doesn't even count. It's an amazing film with a superb performance from Anamaria Marinca.

It got my vote for best foreign thingy.

However, I am not sure that I'd agree that 2007 was a particularly great year for film,. For Hollywood in particular, I'd say a handful of good films flattered to deceive. I feel there is an risk-averse, creative-resistant pall hanging over Hollywood.

But maybe it was always thus and it's just that I'm getting more discerning in my olds age.

Pretty accurate. Hollywood's always been a self-cannibalising entity. But one isn't just talking about Hollywood, now, is one?

Hollywood's staple products are getting a run for their money from foreign film industries. The French turned out a dynamite thriller, Tell No One, very much in the Hollywood action tradition. If the majors in the U.S. don't watch out, they're going to lose market share to films like this.

This French film was released in France in 2006. Wonder when it be coming out in the U.S.

Definitely sounds intriguing.

The Hollywood status quo:
Definitely sequels with lots of CGI FX. Or remakes (either from foreign or domestic properties). Mindless entertainment - the summer movie, the popcorn flick. I suspect worldwide box office is excellent with this kind of movie. IMO they are bloated and I'm losing interest fast.

Indies like JUNO and LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE are successfully emerging. The comedies seem to do better than the serious dramas. Big growth in the niche market of the documentary - IMO has a lot to do with current state of political affairs in the U.S.

Low budget, thoughtful or character driven films (like "The Visitor") seem to get lost in the shuffle. Not enough foreign films getting U.S. distribution either.

Actor/producer types like Drew Barrymore or Adam Sandler seem to know their niche and find properties that do quite well.

My 2 cents...

I expect people to argue with my preferences, but I can say without too much doubt 2007 was, despite certain over-rated pictures, the strongest since possibly 1999.

From last year, I felt the following to be great films: An Old Mistress; Death Proof; There Will Be Blood; Black Book; Angel; 4 Months, Three Weeks, and 2 Days.

And the following were all very good to excellent: Lust, Caution, Sweeney Todd; Planet Terror; Atonement; Amazing Grace; American Gangster; The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford; Zodiac; Michael Clayton; This Is England; The Page Turner; Hot Fuzz.

Control, The Simpsons Movie, Eastern Promises, and No Country for Old Men all demand some admiration too.

Plenty of ambition, boundary-pushing, rule-breaking, energy and entertainment in that line-up. And, still unseen by me: The Lives of Others, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead; I'm Not There; Rescue Road; Golden Door; Gone Baby Gone, and more.

Whew! Rod and billy are back to normal. I loathed There Will Be Blood, hated more than half of Death Proof (Poitier's daughter = worst perf of the year), found Hot Fuzz mostly insufferable, and was thoroughly underwhelmed by American Gangster and Jesse James as well as Planet Terror.

I did adore Zodiac, Eastern Promises, 4...3...2...,and Michael Clayton, and admired No Country, Black Book, Sweeney Todd, Before the Devil..., and Atonement quite a bit.

It's a very solid film (seen at the European Union Film Festival this year and reviewed on my site), not much of anything French about it, though, in terms of approach. This is what I view as a direct attempt to compete with America. I'm not sure it will get a release here, but it should. There could be a huge audience for it, that is, if they don't mind subtitles.

I dislike Atonement and much of Death Proof (but I like Planet Terror). Amazing Grace was a great story badly told. It's still worth watching for the history. Wilberforce was a great man who deserves to be remembered. There Will Be Blood is good until the son leaves, then it's mostly Daniel Day-Lewis chewing scenery.
