I hated Enduring Love.

I really love Haneke. He's the only director in a while who really makes me understand under my skin what it might feel like to be in precarious positions--way, way out of my comfort zone. He doesn't create torture porn. In fact, his approach actually severely criticizes it. He doesn't want us to have fun watching someone sliced and diced.

There's nothing courageous in going to see a movie you're pretty sure you're going to hate. On the other hand, when I talked a friend into seeing "In the Company of Wolves" with me, he never let me forget how much he hated it. Get over it already, I told him. (And I paid for the tickets!)

If you're talking about the Haneke film, the title is actually Time of the Wolf.

ferdy -- I totally get your point, and his, OVER & OVER & OVER again. It's sadistic filmmaking, plain and simple. Thought provoking? Sure, but why? I must say that I'm glad I saw Caché, but the rest can go off to "punk rock" filmmaking hell as far as I'm concerned.

Marilyn: I've never seen a Haneke film. "In the Company of Wolves" was a Terence Stamp film that came out some 20 years ago. It wasn't great, but I didn't think it was awful. My friend did.

Cache was exactly the kind of film I dislike.
Three early Haneke's are here in a set, but I'm not game. Funny Games looks like some modern take off of Loeb & Leopold. I'd rather watch Rope.

Actually, I didn't like Cache nearly as much as his other films. Ehle, you didn't like The Piano Teacher? It had your fave rave Isabelle Huppert in it. I thought it was intensely weird.

Rod - hee hee.

We should be doing a Haneke forum! He seems to get a real rise out of people.

Add it to the list. We certainly have enough topic ideas to keep us busy for a while.

The Romanian film 4 months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days is just as good as Billy said it was. It is realism plus. Long scenes with complex dialogue and intense emtion are shot without cuts and with the camera in one place and lasting anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes. The performances and the direction are superb.

I heard the director on Terri Gross. He said they had to film this way because the actual locations were such small rooms.

Oh-oh. I just realized the movie I haven't seen at the theaters that looks most promising is Dr. Seuss's Horton Hears a Who. Unfortunately there aren't any six-year-old children around to kidnap so I can see it without supervision.

It does look pretty good for a kid's movie. On the other hand, Nancy's lent me her Marlene Dietrich collection, and Morocco is calling to me. Decisions, decisions.

I think it's strength is it's honesty. That and it has something to say; unlike...
