Well, it is a Michael Gondry film, not some no-name. I suppose that had a bit to do with it...

Despite what you say, I still want to see it.

I'll probably see it, but I'm not going to rush to do so. The reviews have mostly been of the thumbs-sideways variety.

If you do, I suggest seeing it at the dollar house. Preferably on 50-cent Tuesday.

You're supposed to be able to view the little movies-within-the-movie on the Be Kind, Rewind website, but I couldn't find them.

Inla - And other droolers. Want more info for drooling?

Marion Cotillard is confirmed to star in Nine with directing by Rob Marshall. http://imdb.com/title/tt0875034/ I know it says 'attached' but her official site confirms it.

But as much as I'm pleased to see Javier attached or confirmed or whatever, why did they pass on Antonio Banderas? Maybe he passed on it!

Hunh. I was going to make a joke about a sequel to 8-1/2, but that's apparently not too far off the mark...

Yes, it's a film version of a play based on the movie. Javier Bardem's also listed as attached.

Nine is a musical, by Maury Yeston. It won the Tony of its year over Dreamgirls. I hope Javier can sing; ditto Penelope and Marion and Sophia.

I haven't read the article but in all fairness, there was very little time to prepare this year's Oscar show because of the WGA strike.

However (another thought), I admit I enjoy the GLOBES more (even tho' they are somewhat of a farce) because of the party atmosphere. Oscar is like attending a dinner party with finger bowls at your stuffy great aunt's.

sorry - this probably belongs in the Lobby.

You know, it probably does, but there's scant room for film miscellanea to register there, since another horse race is taking presidential precedence at present. I normally enjoy the Globules more as well (not this year, however, it was a terrifying sight. Two words: Mary Hart.) And, really, it was only a very little time to prepare in terms of what presenters and performers could confirm and appear, and verifying sponsors. The show itself -- production set-ups and running order and interstitial factors -- could have been and in fact was announced to have been blueprinted and templated down to a clockwork scenario ready to run, way before the strike ended. That is the party line Gil Cates gave to every journalist in the room when he made his big "The Show Is Going On Regardless" press pitch, and Sid Ganis popped in and out of PR mode with same before, during and after that period: A kicked-into-gear, well-orchestrated Plan A. And that was so clearly not the case on The Night, which indeed wasn't bad for 8 days of intense chaos, only 8 days of intense chaos is exactly what the powers that be told us tyros and the rest of the town they were prepared to avoid. I hate getting sh*t-kicked in the face; makes me look like Edna May Oliver on steroids.

Inla -- In that case, Edna May is looking great!

I don't know about the others but I've heard Marion Cotillard sing. You're going to love her! She has a wondrous voice.

Oh, Marj, you're just too kind, woo-hoo. I certainly love the idea of La Cotillard playing Guido Contini's long-suffering wife. It's sort of ideal casting, actually, provided one doesn't mind Francophilia in for Italiana. If Mlle. Marion can really sing, well, heck, that's grrrrrravy. Kewl.

Relayed Deaction Dept.:

LOL at Ooooooh the shiny. Indeed. Blindingly so. Give me a fedora and hold my place in line, am so there.

It is a tad curious that they passed on Mr. Melanie Griffith for Guido, given how well he managed onstage at the Roundabout. Perhaps he didn't want to repeat himself, though my guess would be that Pilar Bardem's Youngest is the hotter Buzz and box office proposition in the eyes of the money mens. After winning the Bald Gold Man With a Sword, Smoldering Javier is no doubt in business with The Happiest Agents in The Industry That Aren't Marion Cotillard's. Anyhoo, it should be interesting to see how it develops. Despite many reservations about the property, I still have a lingering fondness for it, and it could be a spectacular movie.

I love the score to Nine and in the revival Banderas proved he has a voice (he didn't have one when he did Evita, or Che was simply out of his range). Too bad he won't be doing the film. Too bad Raul Julia is dead, because he created the role and probably still could have pulled it off.

Actually, too bad Raul Julia is dead, period. Sigh.

and more importantly, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is starring in it Wink

It's now nationwide and given some of the reviews I've read, it should be the dollar theaters in the next few weeks.

It looks pretty good and it's one I want to see.
