Not to diminish Ledger, but there was nothing like this sort of wailing going on on the Third Eye Forum when Adrienne Shelly was murdered a while back. She had just completed her first film, Waitress, which showed the promise she had as a filmmaker.
But she wasn't a Big Movie Star, so her death passed almost unnoticed here. |

| Its going to be very macabre watching Ledger portraying the Joker in the upcoming Batman film. I've seen the trailer for the film and Ledger's Joker looks dead. |

That's what I wrote on 4/4/07. Shelly's death passed unnoticed almost everywhere. It got almost no play in the newspapers. It was quite some time before it came out that she was senselessly murdered.
Who are we to place more value on one person's passing than another's? The deaths of both Ledger and Shelly are tragic. Both of these talents were young (Shelly was only in her early 40's) and had so much promise. |

I ADORED and knew Adrienne Shelley and most certifiably made it known how horrible I found her murder. |

I hadn't heard of her at the time. I was upset when I found out right before I saw the movie, and a lot more after I'd seen it.
Frankly, it's stupid to expect people to have the same reaction to someone they haven't heard of and someone whose work they're familiar with. |

Billy check out Nov. 4-7, 2006, or Lobby pages 2107-10. A fair amount of talk about Shelly's death, especially from ehle, trish, and joe
Many others unfamiliar with Shelly until seeing Waitress, and I imagine many weighed in when they saw that film and put together the circumstances. I know that's how it went for me. Of course if her movie was bad or left unseen, it wouldn't diminish her tragic murder, but that's not exactly how our brains tend to work. I've wanted to see Hartley's Trust for a while now, but the Dvd and me have never found each other. Now I'll also hunt for The Unbelievable Truth.
Just yesterday, I gave Adrienne Shelly an honorable mention in the very strong Best Supporting Actress category, as a small goodbye.

Also cited Ms. Shelly in Blancheville. Am quite sorry for taking offense in so reactionary a fashion, but am also disinclined to edit any further. Old wounds re-opened to keep recent, not remotely closed ones company during an extremely taxing Tinseltown work day, to put it mildly.
One bright-ish note: the WGA and Alliance of Producers issued a brief statement confirming that informal talks commence in good faith on Wednesday. That is more than has actively transpired between the strike factions since November actively, in essence since June. It may yet be possible for both sides to come to reasonable concessions, and that is certainly what Hollywood hopes. If the strike goes on for another month, far more than awards shows will be in serious jeopardy.

I echo Syd and gromit. I wasn't all that familiar with her work when Ms. Shelly died. But after seeing Waitress, and then going back and reading the news stories surrounding her death, it was a loss that she wasn't able to do more.
She was one of my nominees for Best Sup. Actress for Blanches. |

Don't understand why anyone would take issue with anyone expressing shock or sadness at the death of someone they had seen and enjoyed in movies. That there are nameless many who die the same way without comment is not relevant. |

So I guess I'm in the minority here and maybe ridiculous was a little extreme. but I do think it is somewhat a misplacing of one's emotions. I realize that it is not gallant to criticize someone about their mourning, but this mourning just seems strange to me.
Jynx, I didn't see Brokeback Mountain because it wasn't a subject that interested me or had any desire to watch. Of course there was a groundswell of opinion on these forums that I was commiting some kind of serious transgression by passing up this film. The fact that I wasn't interesting in the trials of two closeted shepherds seems to make me some kind of brute. So many of the so called liberals on here acted very fascist in their view that you were required to see certain films. Regardless of quality, I don't see movies that don't interest me. Period. There are enough movies that do interest me to fill my schedule. |

To be fair, a lot more people here are likely to recognize the Ledger's name than Shelly's. But I loved The Unbelievable Truth and Trust, and commented on her death at the time. |
