Rule 16: Music Awards

http://www.oscars.org/80academyawards/rules/rule16.html

It's out as of Rule A-1

Quote:
I. Original Score

An original score is a substantial body of music in the form of original dramatic underscoring written specifically for the film by the submitting composer.

And B-1.
Quote:

B. ELIGIBILITY

1. The work must be specifically created for the eligible feature-length motion picture.

and presumably a BBC commission entails broadcast/recording of commissioned composition, so B-4

Quote:
4. The work must be recorded for use in the film prior to any other usage, including public performance or exploitation through any media whatsoever.

And B-5, Subsection d

Quote:
5. Only the principal composer(s) or songwriter(s) responsible for the conception and execution of the work as a whole shall be eligible for an award. This expressly excludes from eligibility all of the following:

a) supervisors

b) partial contributors (e.g., any writer not responsible for the overall design of the work)

c) contributors working on speculation

d) scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other pre-existing music

e) scores diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs

f) scores assembled from the music of more than one composer.

all apply. Per B-7, blame it on the Executive Committee of the Music Branch.

Quote:
7. The Executive Committee shall resolve all rules interpretations and all questions of eligibility.

De nada. They're certainly Byzantine.

Saw Atonement and 27 Dresses today. Actually liked the second one better. It's a light, unambitious romantic comedy, and you get a pretty good idea what it's like from the trailer. Katherine Heigl is around for almost every scene, which is fortunate because she pretty much has to carry the movie. There's a scene where she gets to model all of her 27 bridesmaid dresses, and it's priceless, as is the sight gag at the end. My only complaint is that this should have debuted the second week of next month, when this kind of movie is most appreciated. As Valentine's Day movies goes, this is considerably below Something New and Hitch, but better than Music and Lyrics.

Edward Burns's face looks uncannily like Richard Gere's.

As for Atonement, I thought it was undone by the too-clever time sequencing, and oddly enough, the cinematography, which seemed rather flat to me and a bit ugly when it should have been pretty. I wasn't particularly impressed by the acting, either, except for Romala Garai as the 18-year-old Briony, and, to a somewhat lesser extent, Saoirse Ronan as the 13-year-old Briony. I'm a little prejudiced there because I really hated the younger Briony who's a snoopy little bitch, but the performance by Ronan was well-done.

[I strongly suspect I'll be in the minority on here for both films.]

Exactly, which is why Blanche rules.

My understanding is he was completely off his rocker - but WWII will do that to you.

There Will Be Blood is Paul Thomas Anderson's Citizen Kane, albeit a little more evil, and a tad more cynical. Daniel Day-Lewis is memorable, and holds sway for two hours much as Orson Welles did in CK. If the movie gets the best picture Oscar it deserves it.

Um, yes, I read about 3 lines and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

TWBB vs. CK? I'd like to hear the heavy-hitters response to that. To me, it's like comparing the Chrylser Building to a trailer in Louisiana. I think PTA had much better films with Magnolia and Boogie Nights.

This is why "Hurdy Gurdy Man" is getting one of my three nominees for Best Use of a Song in a Motion Picture 2007.

Thank you SOOo much, Me Melly Mell. I've missed ya & ye hit the nail on her head.

Third of all:

I saw Sweeney Todd and can quite adamantly say that I am NOT a musical theater/film representation/film-to-Bway/whatever the fuck a fan. Fantastic effort, couldn't understand half of the words (which I presume were important) coming out of Mrs. Lovett's lips.

Here's something we can all enjoy. I found the few hours watching it very entertaining. Who knew McAvoy could be so funny?

Bonham Carter's diction was atrocious.
