Anyone familiar with Once?
A low-budget (digital video) Irish film about a street musician who meets up with a Czech immigrant who is a kindred spirit. Very slice of life, apparently. Seems it did well at Sundance this year. |

| I've not seen it, but it was very well received in the UK, where it was a moderate indie hit. Charming and affecting, without being too sweet was the gist of the reviews. A film probably best viewed as a pleasant surprise rather than with high expectations. |

Quote: 3-Iron is awesome, and I'm trying to send it as a thank you gift to someone in Australia, but it's apparently not out in region 4 (and they don't have a multiregion DVD player).
Is 3-Iron your favorite from that director? |

Marantz,
Knowing your tastes, a word of warning about Atonement, even I, who am not averse to Winona-like waifs, found Keira Knightley's near emaciated figure hard to take. The thirties fashions look great on her, but I suspect an actual clothes horse would have filled some of those dresses better. |

Well... it's the only Kim Ki-duk film I've seen, although I've heard really good things about The Isle. Right now I don't remember what I heard about Time, but there were some who wanted it submitted as South Korea's Oscar pick last year. |

Thanks for the heads-up Jeremy. It isn't here yet so I haven't had to make a decision yet. From what I've read about the film it hasn't tempted me yet.
Has anyone seen Lars and the Real Girl? I saw it a few weeks ago and I think I wrote a very short review. It is quite a wonderful and oddball movie. |

And you know I've gotta have it. Found a really cheap copy on Amazon. (Though I did manage to resist Flight of the Living Dead.) |

Staying on the topic (both Current Film and Scots), one of the many pleasures of No Country For Old Men was the number of well-known performers in supporting roles that I didn't know were going to be in the movie. Before I saw it, the only stars I'd heard would be in the movie were Bardem, Jones and Brolin.
Then there was the actress who played Karla Jean, the girlfriend of Brolin's character. I spent most of the movie thinking, "Where do I know her from?" and it wasn't until the end credits that I got my answer. The Texas accent really threw me, because she is Kelly Macdonald! |

The character was actually Brolin's wife, not girlfriend. Where had you seen Kelly Macdonald previously? |

The first time I saw her was as the precocious schoolgirl who bedded Ewan McGegor in Trainspotting.

She appears in lots of things, but rarely stars. |
