The other film I saw was Love Actually which, though a little too sweet and insubstatial for a main course, makes a passable trifle or perhpas a steamed treacle pudding. It was pleasantly warm and not without genuine without insight. However, with the possible exception of Emma Thompson's disappointed wife, it was almost totally devoid of the grist necesary to provide the texture and range of depth of flavour of the best desserts. Also, though it was chockful of wry moments, it was also light on genuine laugh out loud moments. Not Richard Curtis's best. I really think he needs a co-writer to help him roughen up those bevelled edges. |

gromit,
I saw quite a bit of Bunuel when I took a film comedy class years ago. Loved his dark, slightly twisted humor, especially the scene with the French postcards in (as I recall) The Phantom of Liberty. Also the scene about the little girl reported missing by her school from the same movie. It was a delight. |

Love Actually was a bit of fluff, but I've been watching for Bill Nighy performances ever since. |

We waited on that, and we lost out. I keep telling myself that it's not the end of the world.
*sniff*
Wherehouse.com still has it listed at $27.96. At least they did just a couple of minutes ago. |

It's obviously because all the Third Eyers are rushing out to order it. |

Just saw two DVDs from netflix that I can recommend highly. One is from 1993 and I'm sure most of you have already seen it. It's This Boy's Life starring Robert De Niro, Ellen Barkin, and (in the leading role of "this boy") Leonardo DiCaprio in his first important assignment. It's based on the true-life experiences (told in his memoir) of Tobias Wolff, whose footloose and rather clueless mom married a hellishly self-hating and abusive man who became (as netflix's notes succinctly state) "the stepfather from hell."
The movie is efficiently directed by Michael Caton-Jones and De Niro and Barkin are very fine. But the center and the key is DiCaprio, who foreshadows his brilliant career with a riveting performance.
The other DVD was The Descent, a horror film of terrific power. Six women go spelunking (or "caving," as they call it) and a mix of Deliverance and The Hills Have Eyes ensues. It's extremely scary and memorably horrific. |

When I saw it on the big screen, I thought the kid in it was great. But until you said so just now, I didn't realize who it was. Thanks. It's time to rent it. |

IT'S BACK!!!
Thanks muchly, now a done deal.
But how weird - I wanted to buy two, but there's only one box before we're back in out-of-stock territory.
B-in-Law Wakasa will have to borrow - well, unless it's in stock again in a few hours. |

SHHH! You're blowing my cover, here!
Actually, if Wonder Woman can bring justice and rightness to the world in a pair of jeans and some comfy shoes, then I'm up for it. |

For some reason I had never seen it before. It's really good entertainment (though De Niro's sadism gets hard to watch sometimes), and DiCaprio is great. |

Did you see the American ending or the more "edgy" non-rated one? |

billy, I got the British import of DESCENT 4 or 5 months before its American theatrical release. It has the original edgier ending. |
