His song as King of the Lemurs was one of the best things about Madagascar, but that wasn't much of a stretch, so the jury's still out as to whether he can really sing. |

Speaking of Superman and Lois Lane, Margot Kidder did a turn tonight on "Brothers and Sisters" as Sally Field's stoner chum.
She didn't look so bad, but now she has one of those old lady cackly voices. |

She did have that great, gravelly voice. Not surpised it's gone to cackly at this point. |

I can, too, but speak-singing (whether Sondheim agrees to it or no) will be disasterous IMO. |

Unless Sondheim has mellowed a lot lately (not true, so I've heard) speak-singing will not do it for him. |

It's a toss up for me between B&S and STUDIO 60 for being best of this season so far.
Didn't get to BETTIE PAGE last night (got too wrapped up in a few other things, like The Grammys (should have tuned over to B&S... now waiting to watch it via download). |

For me it's a photo finish, but B&S squeaks ahead by a hair. The two series are great, and make this TV season a winner. I also am liking 30 Rock much more than I expected to. |

Actually, "Joe and me." Marantz, please stay after class and write on the blackboard, "I will not give grammatical advice." |

"myself and Joe" could also work. |

Nope. Sorry, "myself and Joe" is not correct usage, though it's grammatically okay. "Joe and I" is absolutely wrong, wrong, wrong. But "me and Joe," by the way, is also perfectly correct. I would normally say "Joe and me," but the order was dictated by the context.
In the case of "...like Joe and I," always try removing the "Joe and..." and say "like I." You'll see immediately that "me" is correct. |

Chilly et al--I guess I have to apologize for my purist attitude toward "myself." Here is what Merriam-Webster has to say:
"Myself is often used where I or me might be expected: as subject <to wonder what myself will say — Emily Dickinson> <others and myself continued to press for the legislation>, after as, than, or like <an aversion to paying such people as myself to tutor> <was enough to make a better man than myself quail> <old-timers like myself>, and as object <now here you see myself with the diver> <for my wife and myself it was a happy time>. Such uses almost always occur when the speaker or writer is referring to himself or herself as an object of discourse rather than as a participant in discourse. The other reflexive personal pronouns are similarly but less frequently used in the same circumstances. Critics have frowned on these uses since about the turn of the century, probably unaware that they serve a definite purpose. Users themselves are as unaware as the critics—they simply follow their instincts. These uses are standard."
So I guess I'm one of those "critics." But chilly was right. |
