I hope you do rent Scoop, I'd like to know what you think. Like I said, it reminded me a lot of Manhattan Murder Mystery, which I lot of people didn't like, but I enjoyed. That also means it's a movie which doesn't try to examine life or comment on it in any way. Strictly for entertainment. I have no problem with that.
What got me to rent it, by the way, was Earl's response.
I liked Manhattan Murder Mystery a lot, also.
Did you and I discuss Scoop sometime, or are you referring to what I wrote here? One of the most enjoyable things about it was the notion that the journalist whose wake opens the movie is still so consumed with getting the big story, the "scoop" of the movie's title, that he cheats death to return to this mortal coil and help a young journalist bring it to press. His investigative instincts cause him to ignore the much bigger "scoop" that, yes indeed, there is an afterlife, and focus instead on nailing an aristocrat for murder.
Re The Devil Wears Prada: I had a similar problem with the opening, but ended up enjoying it overall. Hathaway's character was presented to us as a Journalism major from (I think) Columbia and Editor-in-Chief of that university's newspaper. It simply was not credible that she would walk into the corporate headquarters of a magazine to apply for a job and not know who the major players at that publication are. She would've done her homework first. After that initial stumble, however, I felt the story found its footing. Streep was wonderful and I liked Emily Blunt enough to nominate her for a Blanche in Best Supporting.
I think you did write about it here, but I remember a conversation at Brazil, and a look in your eye that said "this movie's a little gem."
And, of course, who can resist an unexpected Buffy cast member sighting? A patch of sunlight in a dark and lonely universe. Had you told me about that? If so, I'd forgotten. |

I don't get why so little of Russell's work is out on DVD. VHS had him fairly represented, and he's a major 70's director. Grrr.... |

That's right! I forgot about Anthony Stewart Head's cameo in Scoop. Did you know, by the way, that he is involved in the Sweeny Todd movie? Not sure what role he'll have, though. |

watched (re-cut or un-cut can't remember) 1900
part serious drama, part sort-of musical, part-comedy?/ odd but very watchable film (that perhaps is a little dated)
a little bit crushing on the younger version of Gerard Depardu (sp)
I forgot how much more daring the sex scenes were in the 70s - I mean god there's one scene
SPOILER
where both DeNiro and Depardu and both getting hand jobs - literally graphically by this actress at the same time and I have to say it was hillarious because DeNiro was smiling up a storm enjoying the hell out of it and Gerard is just I don't know - looking compltely unfazed or maybe he was concentrating real hard on something else but it was funny as hell to watch

I didn't know that. It would have to be Pirelli, the Beadle, or Judge Turpin. Almost impossible to believe it will be that last (which would be great for Anthony Hopkins, if Hopkins can sing). |

Trish;
Here's a link to the review of 1900 I posted on Marilyn's blog last week, if you're at all interested;

Got through 45 min. of Superman Returns and not sure I can take anymore. Routh is an okay Superman, but the rest of the movie is completely miscast (even Keven Spacey: he should be a great Lex, why isn't he?). Bosworth is Worst. Lois. Ever. The rest are subpar. Couldn't even recognize Parker Posey, which for once is a bad thing (or twice; liked her in Dazed).
Most of what works comes from the earlier franchise, especially John Williams's resurrected music. His credit whips by twice as fast as the rest, as if they grudged acknowldegement, but his martial theme is about the only thing that creates excitement or pleasure.
What a waste. I already know the ending, so there won't be any surprises there. |

I've not seen the movie yet, but your words above reminded me of someone.

Parker Posey was okay in the film and I didn't mind Spacey. The rest of the supporting cast sunk the film. And Bosworth was terrible.
The film was full of Christ imagery that didn't work too well. The moment that it really went overboard for me was when Superman falls unconscious into Earth's atmosphere with his arms outstretched and legs together, an obvious and heavy-handed image of the crucified Christ. Then comes the resurrection scene... |

You nailed it, Chilly. And I love the image. Thanks. |

Alan Rickman is playing Judge Turpin in the Sweeney movie, and Sacha Baron Cohen is playing Pirelli. |

Is Pirelli the rival barber? |

Yep. Apparently Steve's agreed to let him do sprechstimme instead of Irish tenor falsettage. |

Timothy Spall is rumored to be the Beadle. That would be good casting. I can see Cohen as Pirelli if he can sing. |
