The people of the little Latvian village described him as friendly, but a bit distant.

Has LA STREEP ever starred in SUNSET BLVD??

I remember Glenn Close...but Streep might really be something.

Streep might be great, but no one could be greater than the magnificent Betty Buckley, who I saw in the role. She had vocal chops that Glenn and Meryl could only dream about. Plus she played Norma Desmond as a genuine 50-year-old--not the eightysomething Close seemed to be doing. Buckley knew that a 50-year-old can be really sexy as well as totally delusional--but her delusion was that of an abused child, not of a gargoyle. It was a thrillingly original take on Norma.

Gracias for this post, Mr. Weeden. She was my teacher for 3 years and I can't believe I never saw any of her performances of that. You rock.

Anyone here having trouble with Netflix the last few days? I live 50 miles from one of their mail centers, so my returns get up there overnight. The last one I mailed was Wednesday, and haven't heard from them since and the status shows as still "at home."

So I go to their so-called Help screen and it tells me I can't report a disk as missing for SIX DAYS. What a load of crap from a company that promises overnight mailing in most of the U.S.

I'm about ready to pull the plug on these assholes. Anyone have an alternative service they like?

--Fuming, waiting for my Squid and Whale

Haven't had any trouble with them for a long time. About 4 years ago, a DVD was lost in the mail and I only had to wait 7 days for the replacement to arrive. I would imagine if you had a mail center pretty close, the replacment time should be quick, but I can also understand the 6 days waiting period to see if maybe it got misplaced in their center.

As for befade's comment about older users, I've been with them since they first started and haven't had any worse or better treatment compared to new members.

I wouldn't mind using the Blockbuster service if I didn't despise them so much and if their movie selection were something to praise. Netfix kicks their ass with the number of independent and NC-17 movies that can't be found at Blockbuster or Hollywood Video.

bart--I totally echo Chilly on his praise for netflix. They are a very reputable and honest firm and I have never had the slightest problem with them. They try to protect themselves from frivolous people--of whom there are many, many, many around--by saying "Wait for a few days." People tend to get anxious when their movies don't arrive and start to overreact. I know, because I've done it myself. Tone it down. There are a lot of companies peopled by assholes. Netflix is definitely NOT one of them.

Seven Years Bad Luck

Max Linder was probably the first great film comedian, predating Mabel Normand and Chaplin by almost a decade. He was very popular in his native France and made several unsuccessful attempts to break into Hollywood. Why his attempts failed mystified some film critics, and after seeing this film, I'm mystified, too. This is a very funny film with some gags imitated by later comedians with great success. For example, the famous Marx Brothers bit with two people on the opposite sides of a mirror. with one imitating the movements of the other was done here, and it's funnier. The bit in High Anxiety where you have a roomful of people being filmed by a ceiling camera, ending with everyone looking up at the ceiling? Mel Brooks did that as a homage to Hitchcock, but Linder did it here a year before Hitchcock shot his first film. Linder does a drunk routine that is as good as Chaplin's and just as funny.

The plot, such as it is, is an excuse to hang comic set pieces on. Max's servants are frolicking around when the accidentatlly break a large mirror. They immediately order a new one, but have to fake it until the new mirror arrives (which is where the mirror-image routine comes in). Max is still hungover enough that the routine works for a while, but he finally does catch on. He has to make a phone call, then he deals with the mirror deception by throwing his shoe at his mimic. Of course, the mirror has been replaced, and he now has seven years bad luck.

The rest of the film has him running away from fate as things get worse and worse. He loses his fiancee twice, first when she discovers her beloved dog in a vase (don't ask), and second when Max puts on a record and it turns into an impromptu song and dance routine with a maid and butler. The girl is outraged that Max has turned her mother's parlor into a dance hall. At this point, I think Max would be better off dumping the girl and running off with the maid, but that underestimates the power of love. I can see here that Max Linder also influenced Harold Lloyd; indeed, some of the routines here would not be out of place in a Harold Lloyd movie. There is one scene that finds Max in a lions' cage that does not go the way such scenes usually do, and may have influenced Mad Wednesday and Normand's The Extra Girl.

Max Linder, alas, suffered from severe depression as a result of a World War I injury and his failure to make it in Hollywood. He and his young wife apparently had a folie à deux relationship and committed suicide on Halloween in 1925.

Re: Netflix.

I've heard it's great if you live IN a distribution city...but mail from Albuquerque (a center) to Taos can take 1 week.

I have friends here who like Netflix and sign up for the 3-movie plan. How much is that?

Because I'm gone a lot, I keep my monthly service plans (DSL, phone, no satellite TV) to a minimum.

"folie a deux" = very interesting. Do you happen to know how this relates to "affective disorders?"

I think that plan is $18.99 plus tax per month.

Netflix also has an option to create multiple queues, which allows you to share you account with other people (although the movies have to be delivered to a single address). Each movie that shows up is marked as to what movie queue it came from. A co-worker does this with two of his neighbors and they split the monthly cost three ways and they all get movies to watch (the charge is billed to a single credit card, but he just gets the money from the other two people). If you are trying to keep costs down and are not home much, this could be an option to look at.

And Netflix states in their terms and conditions that it's ok to share your account.

I have the four-movie plan, but I've been a customer for years and years (and years) and therefore have a bargain rate--another classy thing about netflix. I really can't praise them enough--and the turnaround is amazing now that they have distribution centers in the area.

Nope, not a clue. I do know that the Linders made at least one earlier attempt at the double suicide.

Marj--I just got The Notorious Bettie Page in time to consider Gretchen Mol as Best Actress. Whether or not she makes my personal cut, I'm looking forward to seeing the movie.

Thanks Billy. Don't expect much from the film but Gretchen Mol is terrific. Too bad there are so many good women this year.

Since I haven't seen 'Notes' she can easily fit into my nominations, even if it is a wasted vote. But then so many of mine are. *sigh*

Yea! Wade!!!
