I'd buy the whole collection just to have it.

Finally saw Squid and Whale. Jeff Daniels really nails an egotist and irritating intellectual, and the whole ensemble manages to own their roles, so much so as to make me squirm in places, roar with laughter in others. Homed in on divorce fallout with varying degrees of realism, but having gone through this myself -- and with some similar peccadillos distributed among various family -- I have to say: a lot of palpable hits.

The only area where I balk is in the kid's language and the level of sexual conversation with parents that is permitted -- seems to enter in the realm of caricature, and maybe was a bit overdone. But it makes me think that, in a way, it illustrates the withering of the father's inner creative life -- he is so poorly contained, so lacking in inhibition, so willing to disclosure, that it leaves very little inner substance for the Muse to work with. His is a very sad character, a man truly gone past his prime and never finding his way back.

A funny film, but painful.

Glad you liked it Bart. I really appreciated the boys dilemna in dealing with parents who have given them such a raw deal. (that's what I hated about my own divorce....watching the reactions of my two sons.) Last I heard the director/writer was working on a new film with Nicole Kidman.

I just saw the new DVD of SHERRYBABY with Maggie Gyllenhaal. Too bad this low-budget movie just kind of disappeared. In a normal year she'd probably be getting raves for her performance, but the competition among actresses was just a bit too stiff for 2006.

Worth renting.

Mo, I agree. But wasn't there something very '70's about this film?

I added Sherrybaby to my queue yesterday. If I recall correctly, Gyllenhaal was getting nothing but rave reviews for this part, I think it just happened to come up against some pretty stiff competition this past year. Still really anxious to see it before Blanche noms, though. Although, that category is getting screamingly hard to whittle down to three as it is.

Q up The Good German while you're at it.
Cate Blanchett certainly getting one of my Female Lead nominations.
I hope some folks get to peep that before Blanche voting engages.

And I agree, that category has the most competition, in my O.

Blanchett has got one of my Best Actress votes, but for her so-called "supporting" role in the pas de deux called Notes on a Scandal.

Well like everyone else, there are some films I haven't had an opportunity to see. Notably: Notes on a Scandal; Volver; Half Nelson; Last King of Scotland; Pan’s Labyrinth.
I've also held off on seeing Dreamgirls and Blood Diamond.

Some under-the-radar films I'd rec:
The Road to Guantanamo, Shortbus, L’Enfant, The Good German (all in my Top Ten of 2006) and also the odd Brothers of the Head. And for those who like musicals: Romance and Cigarettes, Idlewild.

Out on dvd?
Well since I have the Dvd in hand, the answer is: not really.

I take it that you aren't using Chinese Netflix.

Stephanie Zacharek has now referred to Heathers as "smug" and "faux-sardonic." I will never bother with her reviews again.

And yes, that's her loss.
