Randi Rhodes is available on live web feeds from a bunch of stations. They're probably all Air America:

You can't be too careful. People are so quick to blame these things on alcohol.

inla, I never get to hear Air America up here, but I'm leaving for a trip to the States in a few days and look forward to tuning into Air America again. Franken and Rhodes especially. When I visit my friends who have a place in Nassau, I spend many happy times floating on my air matress in the pool with my radio on my stomach listening to Randi.
It's addictive. What Yambu said. When they cancelled the L.A. station the first year, my electricity bill went up commensurately from the daily streaming on my computer. How lovely to have friends with a place in Nassau.

I agree. Her willingness to be challenged/corrected is part of what makes her really great.

AND LOVE HER SENSE OF HUMOR.

Gary as to Al Franken, what I like about his show are the guests. He has regular guests on every day - IMO, they are much better than he is. Most are heavy-duty, plugged in journalists.

YES! I think Randi's humor lands because it's spontaneous. Re: SenatoriAl and his overshadowing guests, ain't it the truth. I miss Katherine Lanpher's co-hosting, and the way she'd laugh at "Lonely Goatherd."

She wrote a book, leap days, and is doing the publication-tour circuit. She came back for Frankly Franken's last show of 2006. Lanpher, Lanpher, how I loveher.

I _think_ she is the person who didn't move to MN with the Franken show. She wanted to stay in NYC.

This is what I'm recalling as well.

Hi Lorne,

Thanks for the welcome. It's been a long time since I visited the site.
I've got the bug for movies since the New Year. It's my very 'profound' resolution, trivial, but fun. I saw 4 films this week. The Good Sheperd, Volver, Casino Royale, and Babel. Loved them all. My absolute favorite was Volver. So now that I'm on a roll, I'll visit more often. And if I can figure out how to use the Blanche Award technology, I may even contribute with a vote.
Hi to everyone.[/b]

Welcome back, We-R-1. I was wondering what happened to you. There aren't enough Canadians on the forums.

And the award for Sexiest Performance Of 2006 goes to...

Though I have played the part of lead shepherd and have been an understudy Bottom, I cannot talk with any authority about acting. I find it hard to split the performance from the part, direction and my feelings about the actor and the film as a whole. Therefore, it would be unfair of me to judge how well Gong Li was doing based on her initial scenes in Miami Vice. At that stage of the film, I was not particularly well disposed to Michael Mann’s exercise in hardware porn. Additionally, I found Gong Li’s part, as a top bitch in South American drugs gang to be barely credible; she might have been walking around with a sign that said exotic eye candy, designer clothes horse and love interest. Her motivations and choices, including falling for slimy short-arse, Colin Farrell, also did not make any sense. At the risk of interrupting my flow, I must confess that occasionally I feel resentful when a leading man gets his way a little too easily. Is that unworthy?

Given that she had so much going against her, it was perhaps only my goodwill towards the Chinese star in first Hollywood blockbuster that had me crediting her as being inscrutable rather than wooden. However, and it’s a big however, as she began to fall in love, so did I, and when her heart broke, so did mine and when Colin Farrell comforted her, I thought, “Get your hands of her yer oirish cunt!” Viewed as a whole and within the context and limitations of the part, it was a beautifully modulated performance, fashioned from the most unpromising material. Initially, cold and understated, she melted beautifully; unfolding in a way that only Asian women seem able. If my mountain flower, Zhang Ziyi ever gets a restraining order against me, I would have no problem re-directing my affections towards…

Welcome back! I haven't had a chance to see The Good Shepherd, yet, but look forward to it. I wasn't in love with Casino Royale (more like Daniel Craig's swimsuit) but found it a more than worthy episode in the franchise. The other two you mentioned were just top-notch. All the way. Happy Blanche™-ing!

hi ehle,

I don't usually go to movies like Casino Royale...but I enjoyed it.
The Good Shepherd is excellent acting, an intelligent film. I found it a bit slow. I think you'll enjoy it, though. Nice to hear from you. Thanks.

I am a great fan of water cooler movies, the common currency of film. For me, whether they be event films like Bond, films that capture the zeitgeist or those, like Fatal Attraction, which excite a wider discourse that goes beyond the film itself (let’s face it Glenn Glose’s bunny boiler generated more discussions than all foreign language films made in the same year) these films are the stuff that help make film a matchless medium.

‘Hollywood’ acts as both entrepot, financier and reality check to what we would regard as the art of film. How many fans of the more esoteric independent or foreign films owe their interest to the excitement of their first Star Wars movie? Where does the infrastructure and money come from to support the innovative and bold? Whence vanity projects if not the vain? Who here doesn’t complain about the paucity of choice at their local multiplex, but could give pause to reflect that it owes its existence to the box office champions. For all our outward sang froid, who here is totally immune to the glamour of the star system? Who doesn’t take pleasure when a local boy or a favoured actor gets to ascend to Mount Olympus, Ca. or glory when they descend to grace the films we like? Stand up and be known, if you don't crave an occassional slice of dumb entertainment - all work and no play...And most important of all, without great Hollywood product to measure themselves against, wouldn’t film just be another self-referential art form for a self-satisfied, self serving elite. Modern art anyone.
