billy,

sorry. I read more into your post than was there. One of my pet peeves with this form of communication is a lack of voice or facial expression. I often misinterpret the intention of comments made in this forum because of its narrow dimension.

Billy,

The new one reminds me of the Fast Times at Ridgemont High logo. Thought you'd like to know.

You're right. It's very easy to read stuff wrong. Thanks.

Re: billy's avatar.

(Speaking as someone who used to work as a graphic artist.)
I liked the version with the name and the black and white border. The reason: the typeface looked like musical notes and the border reminded one of piano keys. It looked like an album cover.
The plain photo is nice - but the border is now a single broken white line. You no longer see the black and white as it was before - so the piano key effect is lost. This looks more like sprocket holes - maybe not the effect desired?? I preferred the other border.
I don't mind the absence of the text. The photo is fine with or without text.

Billy's avatar would be best if instead of the black and white border, it was hot pink and purple. Then instead of the words Billy Weeds, it should say Paul Williams. And there should be small red horns photoshopped sprouting out of his skull.

That would be awesome.

The Avatar is too small for that border. It looks cheesy rather than classy. And way too busy for something that size. The name is very nice. Billy, of course, is magnificent.

Gary, the avatar is a peculiar graphic form. It is just soooo small - and I think it sometimes demands that conventional rules be broken.

In fact "cheesy" or "classy" aren't words I think of for this particular graphic. IMO, it should catch the eye - which it does.

I have no opinion on Billy's avatar, but I hate that he appears to be having such a full and fun life.

Weekend Dvd score:

The Cardinal - Otto Preminger
I've been meaning to catch up on Preminger.

They All Laughed - Peter Bogdanovich
Supposedly a lesser film during his heyday, but an interesting cast.

The FBI Story - Mervyn LeRoy
I'm not much of a fan of James Stewart and already him squinting on the cover bothers me a little. But in some roles he's very good, in his way. I know nothing about this film.

Even Dwarfs Started Small - Warner Herzog
One of my favorite weird films. I just picked up a back-up copy because it was cheap and one should always be prepared.

Everything Is Illuminated
Finally found a copy of this (after not buying it when it was available before). On rec from certain 3-eyed people.

Who's Got the Black Box - Claude Chabrol
Chabrol seems pretty hit or miss, but this is very early stuff, so I figured worth a shot.

100 Men and a Girl
I couldn't believe that Deanna Durban was doing such porn in the late 30's. But that Depression was tough. Really I just know the name Deanna Durban but not much else, so this was a film-in-the-blanks type purchase.

The Bishop's Wife
Cary Grant and Loretta Young. Either very good or dated and cheesy. Actually this is something of a minor classic, I think. Maybe.

Starship Troopers
Recent discussion intrigued me. And I do remember hearing the title a long time back.

Sweetie - Jane Campion
The cover promises homosexuality of the kind that interests me.
Apparently Criterion plans to release this title sometime soon. I know nothing about this film and haven't really enjoyed any Campion film. But still willing to try.

They All Laughed has a reputation for being a very good, underrated movie. It is also the film that is supposed to show that Dororthy Stratten could act. It was, along with Saint Jack, Bogdanovich's attempt to break away from the Studio Era Hollywood-inspired movies he'd been making, and do something purely his own.

I've never seen it, wanted to for years. I'm really glad it's available.

Gromit's response to Billy made me bust out laughing.

But then I noticed he spends his weekends watching 10 DVD's and my impression reverted to sympathy.

One thing about her, she was from Winnipeg, but her family moved when she was very young.
