BTW, the spouse and I watched Dark Victory, the overhyped human version of Bark Victory this weekend. I had never seen anything but a clip of it, so I hadn't fully grasped how preposterous and silly this ostensible classic really is. |

Trying to think of examples of films with deliberate use of deus ex machina. The one that comes to me is the alien spacecraft that catches Brian as he plunges from a tower, in Life of Brian. (I mean deliberate in the sense of: for humorous effect) |

Yes, like those. Thanks. I also thought of the revelation that aliens are allergic to water in "Signs." (I took that to be offered with a nudge and a wink) |

The submarine at the end of Buster Keaton's The Navigator.
The end of Joe vs. the Volcano. (Two in that one.) |

Adaptation - is that where Chris Cooper is eaten by an alligator? Yes, that works. This film has to be highest on my list of "Want to see this again, and keep forgetting to do."
I can't remember anything about Joe vs. the Volcano. Did I even see it? I feel like I must have, and that it has a plot that could not conceivably lack in a deus ex machina. I need to magma time to catch up with this film. Or just lava it well enough alone. |

At the end of Joe vs. The Volcano Joe and Patricia (Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan) (1) jump into the volcano (worst date ever) which spits them out, and they land in the ocean well away from land (2) right next to their luggage, which they made into a raft earlier in the movie |

"You can have flaws, problems, but wow them in the end, and you've got a hit. Find an ending, but don't cheat, and don't you dare bring in a deus ex machina."
