The Phoenix Judgmental Map has some funny things. "Restaurants ending in "...bertos"" you may have to live here to get. Lost hikers and more lost hikers was good, but I wish they had the room to add "Dead Lost Hikers" on Camelback, which is somewhat notorious for that.

You might be able to submit that addition to whoever created the map.

OKC OK with Satanic mass in the civic center.

Bart, did you read the North Dakota poll article?
I knew that ND had a big oil boom, but didn't realize that per capita income was now 2nd only to Connecticut.

I'm not sure exactly how they are counting the oil boom.
They use 2008 as the beginning, but before oil starts pumping there are lots of jobs and resources employed to get things ready -- surveyors, roads, equipment, etc. The exploratory and per-pumpimg phase would constitute a mini-boom or two. Especially for a state with fewer people than my home county in NJ ...

Gee, maybe it's not such a good idea to have a 9 year old fire an Uzi.
Especially on automatic.
http://www.reviewjournal.com/news/nevada/shooting-instructor-dies-after-being-accidentally-shot-girl

Terrible for all involved.
You'd think the instructor would be either holding her arm or close enough to grab it in an instant. But the whole concept is stupid.
Feel bad for the girl.
Stupid parents.

I think I've told this story before.
But I went on a business trip one time, as part of a group looking to invest in a proposed nature park in Sichuan Province. The hosts asked me if I would be interested in firing a gun. I say, uh, okay.
The next day after cruising through the site, our vehicle is stopped by a policeman. I'm wondering what's wrong. We all pile out of the van. And the policeman hands me his gun and I'm told there are some targets set up near a sand bank about 60 feet away.

Now I had never fired a gun before. So I say I'd like to see someone else shoot first so I have a better idea what to do -- stance, grip, recoil, etc.
So the cop fires off a few rounds, then someone else in my group. Then it's my turn. A fog is rolling in, but I can mostly see the targets and there doesn't seem to be anybody in the area. I do fine enough, even if it's too far and foggy to see if I hit any of the targets.

Then they say they have a semi-automatic for me to shoot.
And behind us a little is what I believe to be an AK-47 with a tripod on the ground. You lie down and fire this weapon. Targets now about 75 feet away and fog piling in. And I have to encourage a few bystanders to move further back. Have to admit it was kind of a rush firing the thing, but the muzzle did lift up on me a bit when firing. And I squeezed off a dozen bullets in just a few seconds. Then another shorter burst.

Seemed rather foolhardy and dangerous handing a stranger a handgun then a military style weapon. Bizarre for a cop to give you his gun to fire.

I can't imagine a 9 year old having the strength, concentration and ability to handle an automatic weapon. What a stupid tragedy.

Gromit, there are few nuts nuttier than an American gun nut. Some weird primal thing seems to overrun the mind of a person firing a gun, which can become addictive, and obliterate all reason.

You also see them enjoying picnics in 70 mph winds, in SW Omaha...

Gromit....I used to joke that AZ was ready to issue every 4th grader a gun and require gun safety classes.

Personally this makes me sick. I was on a jeep tour in Tucson where the driver stopped at an overlook and offered each of us the chance to fire a rifle. I declined. My boyfriend at the time thought I was being stupid. Then again, he thought I was insane for wanting to abolish capital punishment

So then did you sit on opposite sides of the jeep?

Not a surprise, but sad. I hope her daughter didn't have to make the Decision.

Night after night after night, we're talking c. 1965, I sat at ringside at Downstairs at the Upstairs, a little club in Manhattan, to hear, again and again and again, the same jokes told by the same woman. She had me falling down with laughter through the sheer magic of her delivery. She moved on, and I didn't always love what she did, but I will never forget those enchanted evenings in the Downstairs room. R.I.P. Joan.
