I thought BV was rather obvious and heavy-handed in its portrayals. Subtle it ain't.

The scene with moving the old vet into the nursing home was a good idea, and would/could have been much much better if you had any idea what was going on and if it was filmed competently.

The uke scene felt a bit contrived to me, but indeed had charm. The film did a very nice job with some of the music, but I thought the main score (by Grizzlybear?) was hideously trite.

I should add that the song You & Me has been on a few northern soul compilation albums. And besides having a distinct Impressions vibe, it also sounds a fair amount like The Isley Brothers Motown output, specifically This Old Heart of Mine.

I guess Blue Valentine by Tom Waits wasn't on the soundtrack. That would surely have been a high point.

I need help from our local Limey on this: Jeremy - Is this accurate?

The difference between the United Kingdom, Great Britain and England explained.

Daffy, it's accurate as far as I can tell.

That little film gives me all the more respect for Queen Elizabeth, who has to keep track of all that stuff.

Daffy,

I couldn't listen to the video, so I'll answer your question blind.

England is the country that forms the bulk of mainland Britain, it is bordered by Scotland in the North and the Wales in the West.

My passport says I am a citizen of the Untied Kingdom Of Great Britian and Northern Ireland. From this, I'd assume that the United Kingdom refers to England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, but that Great Britain does not include any part of Ireland. Strictly speaking Wales is a principality not a country (it has been welded to England the longest) but most Welsh people don't see it that way.

it is moot whether the geographical term the British Isles includes Ireland. I imagine most Irish people would say that it does not.

I'm looking forward to the Six Nations (Rugby Tournament) between England, France, (All) Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wlaes which kicks-off this weekend.

Jeremy, listen to the video when you get a chance. It's good and very informative, especially for people outside the British Commonwealth.
There are a number of little countries (mostly islands) that I didn't know were part of the territories (still).

Sure, once he moves to New Zealand it becomes the Untied Kingdom of Great Britain.

It is all pretty daffy.
My question is what is the difference between Britain and Great Britain, or are they interchangeable?

I was recently reading about the many proposed names for Canada:
Tuponia (The United Provinces Of America)
Albertland
New Albion
Esfiga (England, Scotland, France, Ireland, Germany, Aboriginal)
Borealia
Transatlantica
and more
can be found here on page 16.

All the weird border disputes and colonial remnants scattered around the globe are interesting. Much like Gibraltar, Spain controls 4 small enclaves on the Moroccan coast -- Cueta, Melilla and apparently two others. Morocco itself controls Western Sahara the largest unresolved colonial possession (a non-self-governing territory in UN parlance).

France still has a lot of little colonies. French Guiana is probably the most notable since that contains Cayenne, Devil's Island and the spaceport Ariane launches from. They also own a little atoll, Clipperton Island, southwest of Mexico, which is usually but not always uninhabited.

One of my favorites is that Australia owns Heard Island and the McDonald Islands, which are in the southern Indian Ocean off the coast of Antarctica. The highest point in the country of Australia is on Heard Island, and it's an active volcano. Nobody lives there now, but there used to be a settlement.

I always thought "Britain" was England, while Great Britain was England plus all the minor appended stuff, like Wales or Scotland or Cornland - or wherever Cornsh people are from,.

I think that's the de facto usage, as Scottish people or Welsh identify themselves as such, and don't ordinarily want to self-identify as British, while for the English it's all rather plummy.

Although maybe I'm just muddying things, as no one is going to say I'm Great British.

I wonder if I'm the only one to mentally see a "C" there.
