Shaiman's really grown as a composer/arranger over the years. Mostly mainstream music, but he's very good at it. |

It was dull, IMO. Sorry Lorne. I thought it was the worst awards show in some time.
Lorne - You're right about Shaiman. He really has grown. |

Now for a bit of snark:
I hated Sarah Jessica Parker's vintage Chanel.
Michelle Pfeiffer is the only actress who should be allowed to wear red. All others, no no no. (I'm talking to you, Sigourney Weaver and Vera Farmiga.)
Why all the audience cutaways to Kathy Bates??
Forest Whitaker has slimmed way down. Hope he's okay.
I love Barbara Streisand, but presenting Best Director? Because she telegraphed Kathryn's win, though, I'll let it slide.
Show ran long, as usual, but I liked the way they did the filmed pieces on the nominees. |

I disagreed with three of the top four awards (I would have been happy for the previously happy couple to share the spoils) but nobody was asking, so what are you gonna do?
I don't think James Cameron will ever get another crack at it, unless he gets all Schindler's List on us. |

I was commenting on Facebook during the awards (since no one was here).
I predicted correctly all the major wins. |

Quote: And with that the 82nd Academy Awards come to an end. It's left to Steve Martin to say the official farewells, looking back over a lengthy night that began with Angela Griffin screaming on the red carpet and ended up with Kathryn Bigelow clutching the statuette. "This show was so long that Avatar now takes place in the past," says Martin.
And that sounds about right. This was the night in which a record-breaking $500m behemoth was comprehensively shot down by a low-budget war movie, and when a film that points the way to the future of cinema was (at least momentarily) consigned to history. |

Jeff Bridges won the award and The Dude went up to accept it for him, Man.
I loved what Forest Whitaker said to/about Sandra Bullock and then I loved her gracious and funny acceptance speech. It was beautiful that she used that moment to reflect the spotlight onto her co-nominees. |

I think the overall flavour of the Oscar event comes from the intangibles rather than the scripted bits. Regardless of who hosts it, how they juggle the dance numbers, how the sets are designed or who the presenters are - all the stuff they can control - what makes or breaks the night is the UN-controllable factor of who wins, what they say in their acceptance speeches and how we feel about the winners. We love redemptions of old actors, fuck-ups by anyone, surprise winners, obnoxious or moving speeches, and underdogs coming out of nowhere. Like any story, the Oscars need plot twists. Unfortunately, you can't plan that, and, even more unfortunately, we didn't get any of those twists tonight.
Had Precious come up big tonight would've been remembered as a great 'underdog' Oscar evening.
Had Avatar won big and Cameron blown his own horn it would've become a celebration of the blockbuster.
As it was, tonight's Oscar show produced a list of mostly expected winners, getting our heads nodding in approval but not snapping forward in surprise. It's not the fault of Steve and Alec, nor is it the fault of the producers. It's just a story where we mostly already knew the ending. |

I've always liked Sandra Bullock: not classically beautiful, but more attractive than many who are; a fine comedic actress (I'm not convinced by her recent crowning); and, in as much as I can gather, a woman with a sense of perspective about who she is and what she does.
And, however Hollywood the moment, it's hard to to resent Jeff Bridges winning. |

Loved Bullock's acceptance speech. Despised Mo'Nique's.
On another front, here's a Times article (due to be published in tomorrow's hard copy, I think) which stretches back a long time in my career, but hell, any publicity is good.

Look toward the end of the article. It's nice to be linked with Streep. |

You're absolutely right, Lorne. Still I'll be interested in the reviews of the show tomorrow. |

Thinking the same thing. Was it my imagination, or did his voice also sound affected? Don't mean to indulge in horrible gossip, but it was noticeable and I hope the guy's okay. |
