Dane Cook is the only comedian whose success is more incomprehensible than Carlos Mencina's. |

Funny (or actually, not), I was thinking of Mencina when I read the article. I don't have movie channels, so I've never seen Cook. His material sounds SO BAD. And the definition of SO BAD for me has up til now been Carlos Mencina. |

I swear the Tori Spelling thread was more interesting than discussing Old Navy and T.J. Maxx!

I glanced at that earlier today and wondered who that beautiful woman was. Great shot.
Way to go, Agassi. Thanks for all the returns. |

I watched part of the later matches today. Sad, but at the same time, it was touching to watch him walk off the court. He was always one of my favorite players. |

I'm sorry, too. Strange accident.
But what was bizarre was that this was a guy who actually wasn't well known in Australia. His fame was mostly in the U.S. |

Steve Irwin is very well known in Australia, but many Australians were uneasy at what they saw as a perpetuation of a Crocodile Dundee type stereoptype. |

It would be easy to say that Steve Irwin's death was somehow inevitable, but there is no doubting that it was a corollary of his way of life and the need to satisfy the insatiable demand of what his fellow Australian called the crystal bucket. Steve Irwin was not an academic or like fellow presenter Richard Attenborough, an asset of a major broadcaster. All he had was himself and the thrill seeking niche he created.
For all it s zoological and environmental dressing, Steve Irwin was appealed to the same viewing impulse as Jackass and America’s Dumbest Criminals. Did he feel compelled to take ever greater risks in order to maintain his audience? I mean, how many times can you watch him dodge a lunging crocodile and still be wowed.
His death caused by a heavy dose of nuero-toxin delivered to the heart by a stingray, is obviously a horrible tragedy for his family, but at the same time the freak accident seems strangely apposite. And perhaps better than watching him trying to maintain a television career, courtesy of quicker than expected croc or an unpredictable shark, minus a leg or an arm. |

Re Irwin:
I heard on this morning's news that his Wikipedia entry had been updated within minutes of the official announcement of his death, before many news agencies had even reported it. |

I rarely rooted for Agassi outside of international competitions like Davis Cup, where I always want the USA team to win. Those rare exceptions where I did root for him were times when he was playing against a real jerk like Greg Rusedski or Yevgeny Kafelnikov, for example.
I'm not happy to see him go, however, especially not playing his best. There is no doubt he was an excellent player who, when he was on his game, could strike the ball with almost preternatural timing and accuracy. There was also the creative way he used the court angles to his advantage.
The game will miss him. |

Sad news about Steve Irwin. I liked him, even thought he could be annoying at times.
Shades of Grizzy Man? I don't think so. He seemed to have most of his berrings in place and came across as mostly stable. Anyone that does that much work out in the wild for that long is going to have some oddness to them, but he seemed pretty normal to me.
It's a loss the outdoor world will miss. |
