This really kind of burns me:

Cannes Jury Head Laments Quality of Competition

The president of the jury at this year’s Cannes film festival, Emir Kusturica, said that the quality of the competition fell short of what was expected from the annual cinema marathon. The Sarajevo-born director and two-time Palm d’Or winner said he was disappointed with the overall standard of the 21 films in the official selection.

I wonder what kind of film he was looking for and why he felt the need to diss the competitors.

Only marginally related but ... I saw a dvd of Emir Kusturica's Underground in a shop. It was a French dvd, so we popped it in to check for English. No English subbies (or dubbies), so I didn't buy it, but ended up watching a few 5 minute chunks of the film, and it looked great. Actually, the one shop assistant and a Canadian guy ended up watching parts with me, and we were all interested and amused (despite limited understanding).

I once got a copy of a complete Jean Vigo box (from Amazon.fr) that I was really excited about. (Don't think any of it was on DVD here at that point.) Put it in the machine, and - no English. A Propos de Nice was okay, since it's pretty visual, but forget everything else on there. (I did rent L'Atalante a couple years later, which made me depressed at what I'd missed.)

I'd think they'd have enough UK buyers to make English somewhat standard, but maybe it's part of the traditional Brit-French squabble thing.

Undergound sounds worthwhile to dig up.

I didn't like L'Atalante.

I thought it was really touching, in a surprising way.

I don't remember it well, but I kept waiting for something to happen and it never did.

Well, something kinda did happen at the end. Sort of.

It's like Mr. and Mrs. Bridge in that way.

I didn't know that Olivier screen tested for the Godfather role, and would have gotten it if he hadn't fallen ill. Duvall said his Italian accent was perfect.

Well his yiddish accent certainly wasn't.
