I'm holding off on asking for a copy of Dressed to Kill, thinking Earl and I can share one, and figuring he'll want to see it.
This is a good idea. I will PM my address to Marc. |

Quote: Loved the nightclub porn scene with Frankie Goes To Hollywood doing "Relax".
That was worth watching the whole film for.......I can't believe that on the 4th watching......I liked this the best. Why on earth did I get rid of my copy?
Be prepared, though........Dressed to Kill isn't as much fun. |

Quote: With Body Double the whole deal seemed like such an obvious set-up from the get-go anyway.
when Wasson's character first enters the plush home that he is going to be housesitting he says "this is a great set-up". And I thought, yes it is. |

What's with the constipation here?
I watched Dressed to Kill almost a month ago. I realize there were access problems, but there's always another film to move on to. I already watched Scarface and Carlito's Way a week or so back, so I can start forgetting those by the time a discussion rolls around.
Question: What's the consensus on Pacino as a Hispanic gangster, especially regarding his accent.
I found it all a little disconcerting, but I think that's because of my association of Al as thoroughly Italian. I was amused how in both films, Al's Hispanic hitmen rail against those "guinea wop mf-ers". And BDP slips in another wink/joke in Carlito's Way, as one of the mafioso guys says that at first he mistook Al for an Italian.
But it seemed that Al's accent in Scarface was off and awkwardly over-emphasized at times, while in both films it seemed that the accent came and went rather freely.
I guess we make a lot of cultural assumptions, but Spanish and southern Italian people have a lot of commonality in Mediterranean culture, looks, language, etc. Yet Pacino would have a lot more to draw on in playing a wiseguy than a Cuban or PR gangster.
Maybe just my problem, but seemed that I had to remind myself -- "oh yeah, Al's a Latino gangster" here -- a number of times. |

Gromit, I hear you.
I'm sending out DRESSED TO KILL dvds on Monday to those who requested them. Betsy will host the discussion starting July 30. She's out town and that's the soonest she can do it. |

If anyone wants to rent a streaming version from Amazon.com of Dressed to Kill, they have it for $2.99 here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000IZVPRY
And if you have access to AOL Video, you can stream it for free through them. Looks pretty good, too. |

Marc,
I just got the DVD out of my mailbox. It must've arrived yesterday. Thanks. I'll start watching it tonight and be ready for the discussion hosted by Betsy.
Also, since it was the next movie in my queue, I got The Untouchables from Blockbuster. But I'll hold off on watching that for a few days while I get to Dressed to Kill and then other titles. |

True! I have not forgotten. I'll call or PM you and we can set up a time when I can give you this copy of Dressed to Kill and your DVD of Phantom of the Paradise which I've had forever. |

We could also take a look at local showtimes while we're at it. |

Befade here ready to launch the DRESSED TO KILL discussion...........
Thank you Marc for my copy.
Dressed to Kill is my favorite De Palma. Probably simply because of Angie Dickinson. She admits this was her role of a lifetime. She had just the right amount of polish to make this film glisten.
Let’s get this out of the way first.........Brian DP stole from Hitchcock again. (It’s obvious when the film starts with a scary shower scene.) He also borrowed the storyline from Psycho that has the heroine be killed off during the first third of the movie......and the rest of the story involves 2 family/friend/strangers searching breathlessly for the killer. (I think De Palma does a better job with the last 2/3 of DTK than Hitch did with Psycho’s.)
Same holds true for the lifting of a guilt-ridden heroine. (Does she deserve to die for theft or adultery?) A minor lift is from Vertigo......the museum scene. De Palma elevates this mesmerizing Dickinson/handsome stranger duet to high art. Watch the film just for this.
Of course De Palma never makes a perfect film. Jump in and express your personal distastes. Mine is.....Angie had heavy makeup on when she was taking her morning shower. Heavy to the point where we know that body doesn’t belong to someone as old as she is. |

De Palma gets a nice joke in at both his and his audience's expense: there's a scene where the killer appears to be in two places at once, and I think nearly every De Palma fan thinks sloppy filmmaking again and essentially dismisses the incident. But then we learn that these are two seperate characters and that we've been fooled by master movie satirist De Palma. |
