I just want to suggest right now that we move next year's Blanches to a different day (preferably the Friday before the Oscars) so it doesn't conflict with my friends' Oscar party, which starts at 6 Central time.

I agree - the year I did the presentation, it was the Friday night. Then we had the weekend to preen in our perfect picks while the Oscars prepared for their pithy preferences.

I would say that it should be up to the host to decide on the night, if some night or nights are very inconvenient for him/her.

Alliteration by design. (in case you couldn't tell)

So what's the time again for the Blanches? EST, CST, MST and PST

And for jeremy and Rod, we need England and Oz times, too.

If the Oscars are always on the last Sunday in February, this year was the earliest they could be, and we had to rush the Blanches. Next year they should be on February 28, which means we'd get a few more days to vote and still have the Blanches on Friday or Saturday.

What happened was that sometime in the past couple of years, Hollywood moved the Oscars from end of March to end of February. That really put a damper on stuff because of release dates being so close to Oscars. It used to be that the Golden Globes acknowledged films I'd barely even heard of, let alone seen, but by Oscar time, it was more of an even playing field. That's why the rush, I believe, for Blanches as well as Oscars.

I know the Acadamy looks to the Blanches for guidence. So I would hate for us to follow rather than procede the Acadamy in reaching our decision. (Of course, Cannes would like to look to us, too, especially in relation to the Palm d'Or. But we can't satisfy everyone.)

Thanks for the thinking of me Chilly, but I'm used to doing the maths or math (as you would have it). 5pm EST Sunday equates to 11am Monday here (Hamilton, NZ that is).

Oscar predictions and wild-eyed guesses. If I would have voted for something different, I say who in parentheses.

Song: Jai Ho, Slumdog Millionaire (O Saya, Slumdog Millionaire)
Score: Slumdog Millionaire
Foreign Language Film: Waltz with Bashir (? Didn't see any)
Documentary Short: The Conscience of Nhem En (The Final Inch?)
Documentary Feature: Man on Wire
Sound Editing: Iron Man
Sound Mixing: Slumdog Millionaire
Visual Effects: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (The Dark Knight)
Makeup: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Costume Desigh: The Duchess (?)
Art Direction: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (?)
Film Editing: Slumdog Millionaire (The Dark Knight)
Cinematography: Slumdog Millionaire
Short Film, Live Action: Auf der Strecke aka On the Line
Animated Short: Presto!
Animated Feature: WALL-E
Screenplay, Adapted: Slumdog Millionaire (Doubt)
Screenplay, Original: Milk
Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight (Robert Downey, Jr., Tropic Thunder)
Supporting Actress: Penelope Cruz, VCB (Viola Davis, Doubt)
Actor: Sean Penn, Milk
Actress: Kate Winslet, The Reader (Anne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married)
Director: David Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire
Picture: Slumdog Millionaire

So eight for Slumdog Millionaire, three technical awards for Benjamin Button, and two awards for Milk, and the rest all over the place.

I think Mickey Rourke may steal the best acting nod and I don't expect Iron Man to win anything, but generally I think Syd's guesses won't be far off.

Penn should win, but a Rourke upset would not surprise me. Though the Acadamy might consider Rourke less one of them and therefore more undeserving.

FYI, most of the "professional" predicters are saying it will be Rourke.
