Emotional impact is one of the best determinants of artistic greatness.

Joy, sadness, anger, awe - I've gotta' feel something to consider any work of art 'great'.

I was toying with the idea of limiting myself to one movei per director if we went with 25, but with 50 it should get varied enough without resorting to that.

I start a new job in a new city Monday, and will have spotty internet access - perhaps none at all until next weekend. If you have comments on my list or questions, kindly pm me with a link to what you post here.

Reminder for your official lists:

Please type the name of each film in a way that can be alphabetized. "Wizard Of Oz, The", "Godfather, The", etc.

Rod,

What's the logic behind limiting yourself to one film per director? If the priority was to pay homage to 50 great directors, then fine, but we're assessing the best overall package, the films, regardless of who directed them, acted in them or composed the score.

Vertigo
Rebecca
High Noon
Kind Hearts and Coronets
Sideways
The Manchurian Candidate
(1962)

I'm going through Wikipedia's film list by year, through 1988 and already have over 200 films under consideration. They don't include that many foreign films, though, so I'll have to figure out how to do those.
