Here are the rules:

- All members are eligible to nominate their TOP 50 all-time films.

- There are no restrictions on type, language or nationality of a film. If you genuinely love it and you've seen it on a screen - include it on your list.

- POST YOUR PRELIMINARY LISTS! Yes, we like preliminary lists, half-baked lists, off-the-top-of-your-head lists, boats that list and any music composed by Liszt. The idea is to get as many film titles out there and to jog as many dormant memories as possible. With so many great movies from over a century of great movies, we need to see what's out there. Post whatever lists you want for now; we're not casting any official nominations until later on. Looking at everyone else's ideas will help our own, so that when it's time to post our Top 50 Nominees we won't have to say, "Damn! I forgot about...". So this forum begins as a resource to help gather ideas for our TOP 50 to come.

- Nominations begin in 10 days. We will begin posting our official TOP 50 lists on Wednesday, August 8, the day in 1876 when Thomas Edison patented the Mimeograph.

- Nominations 1 through 50 will be given points from 50 to 1. A first-place vote counts for 50 points, a second-place vote gets 49, film number 50 gets 1 point, etc.

- All titles in your official list should be typed as a numerical list, without commentary and with proper formatting ("Maltese Falcon, The"). This is to facilitate the job of tabulating the whole mess. Save all comments for subsequent posts.

- Any volunteers wishing to count titles and add points should contact me.

- Third Eye's TOP 100 Films will be announced...whenever enough people have voted and once the counting's done.

Surprising. I assumed someone would've bought you one as a birthday present when they first came out.

If My Fair Lady had starred Julie Andrews, it would rank much higher on the list. I much prefer Janet Gaynor's A Star Is Born to either of the musical remakes. I don't care for The Sound of Music.

For billy??

No way. I see him as a formerly blank leather-bound notebook and fountain pen kind of guy.

Well here's a proto-Top 50 list (52 really), which only goes up to 1970.
Roughly ten per decade (with silents counting as one unit).
The order is subject to vary. But I'd assume that the Top 5 from each decade will make the final list.

1. Metropolis (Lang)
2. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Weine)
3. The Gold Rush (Chaplin)
4. Dr. Mabuse: The Gambler (Lang)
5. Sherlock, Jr. (Keaton)
6. The Last Laugh (Murnau)
7. The Adventures of Prince Achmed

1930’s

1. M (Lang)
2. Zero for Conduct (Vigo)
3. The Crime of Monsieur Lange (Renoir)

4. Sullivan's Travels (Sturges, 1941)
5. The Lady from Shanghai (Welles, 1947)
6. Citizen Kane (Welles, 1941)
7. There Was a Father (Ozu, 1942)
8. Nightmare Alley (Goulding, 1947)
9. The Southerner (Renoir, 1949)
10. Quai des Ofevres (Clouzot, 1947)
11. Shoeshine (DeSica)
12. Out of the Past (Tourneur, 1947)

1950’s
1. Umberto D (De Sica, 1952)
2. Touch of Evil (Welles, 1958)
3. Sunset Boulevard (Wilder, 1950)
4. Night of the Hunter (Laughton, 1955)
5. Los Olvidados (Bunuel, 1950)
6. A Face in the Crowd (Kazan, 1957)

1960’s
1. 8½ (Fellini, 1963)

und 1970's to Present
I haven't worked up any ordered lists, but these will make the final cut:
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
Annie Hall
The Werckmeister Harmonies (Tarr, 2000)

And some which will get heavy consideration (in no special order):
Veronika Voss (Fassbinder, 1982)
Being John Malkovich
Three Kings
Wallace & Gromit: The Wrong Trousers (Park, 1993)
The Saddest Music in the World (Maddin, 2003)
Memento (Nolan, 2000)
Raising Arizona
Fight Club (Fincher, 1999)
Repo Man (Cox, 1984)
Life of Brian (Jones, 1979)
Raise the Red Lantern (Yimou, 1991)
Dog Day Afternoon (Lumet, 1975)
The Great Santini
And Justice For All
The Last Picture Show (Bogdanovich, 1971)
In a Year of 13 Moons (Fassbinder, 1978)
A Woman Under the Influence (Cassavetes, 1974)

Yikes, I've already listed 72 titles, without even digging too deeply. And I'm sure I'm forgetting a few important films.

Animated Films. It's very easy to come up with 50 even without short subjects. Ranked here by their success as animated films, so this may not agree with the order in the musical list. In other words, South Park gets docked.
1) Pinocchio
2) Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke)
3) Spirited Away
4) Aladdin
5) Toy Story 2
6) Toy Story
7) The Little Mermaid
8 ) The Adventures of Prince Achmed
9) The Incredibles
10) Dumbo
11) Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
12) Tarzan (1999)
13) Akira
14) Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
15) My Neighbor Totoro
16) Chicken Run
17) Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind
18 ) Allegro Non Troppo
19) The Triplets of Belleville
20) Fantasia
21) Beauty & The Beast (1991)
22) The Prince of Egypt
23) Corpse Bride
24) Monster House
25) Song of the South
26) Lilo and Stitch
27) The Lion King
28 ) Lady & the Tramp
29) Ratatouille
30) A Bug’s Life
31) The Emperor’s New Groove
32) Laputa: Castle in the Sky
33) Surfs Up
34) The Sword in the Stone
35) Cinderella (1950)
36) Mary Poppins (docked because it doesn’t have much animation)
37) Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
38 ) Monsters, Inc.
39) Finding Nemo
40) The Fox and the Hound
41) Shrek
42) Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit
43) One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961)
44) South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut
45) Fantasia 2000
46) Shrek 2
47) Looney Tunes: Back in Action
48 ) Grave of the Fireflies
49) The Iron Giant
50) Flushed Away
51) Tokyo Godfathers
52) Treasure Planet
53) Over the Hedge
54) The Nightmare Before Christmas
55) Millennium Actress
56) Robots
57) Kiki’s Delivery Service
58 ) The Great Mouse Detective
59) American Pop
60) Antz
61) Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas
62) The Jungle Book (1967)
63) The Last Unicorn
64) Yellow Submarine
65) Happy Feet
66) Cars

Corrected to add in Finding Nemo and Yellow Submarine (but not Bambi, which I don't care for.)

Note: Although I think Buster Keaton was a better director than Chaplin, I also think Chaplin's three best films are better than Keaton's best. None of Keaton's silents are really bad (although The Cameraman, The Three Ages and The Saphead come close), and Keaton's shorts are all worth seeing, while many of Chaplin's are not. And I'm quite serious that I think Spite Marriage and Steamboat Bill, Jr. are better films than Sherlock, Jr. despite the last's special effects.
