Whoa, will you look at all this activity.
Mo, I read somewhere that make-up artists will be part of the Academy voting this year for the first time. Something like an additional 150 voters. At least that's what I think I read. |

I sincerely hope that those who have not seen The Notorious Bettie Page will rent it prior to the Blanches. While the film is thin, Gretchen Mol is excellent and though she may not win, she certainly deserves a nomination.

Don't they vote on the Oscar for makeup? |

Well, the foreign oscar short list was published today.
http://www.variety.com/awardcentral_article/VR1117957521.html?nav=news&categoryid=1985&cs=1
Quote: For the first time ever, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences on Tuesday unveiled a shortlist of nominees for foreign-language Oscar -- with the announcement and the results reflecting recent rule changes. The nine pics are "Days of Glory" (Algeria), "Water" (Canada), "After the Wedding" (Denmark), "Avenue Montaigne" (France), "The Lives of Others" (Germany), "Pan's Labyrinth" (Mexico), "Black Book" (The Netherlands), "Volver" (Spain) and "Vitus" (Switzerland).
The key paragraphs may be
Quote: All have U.S. distribution, in contrast with two years ago, when the majority of the five contenders lacked domestic distribution from a major company.
Sony Classics has four of the nine: "The Lives of Others," "Black Book," "Volver" and "Vitus." Distribs with one apiece are Fox Searchlight
("Water"), IFC ("Wedding"), Picturehouse ("Labyrinth"), ThinkFilm ("Montaigne") and the Weinstein Co. ("Days of Glory").
I think at least two of these are deserving, but am still disappointed.
Given that Sony had that Almodovar roadshow this fall (and I do like Almodovar, and think he deserves an Oscar), they've been working on this for quite a while and I'm pretty sure that, barring last-minute unforseens, it's virtually sewn up.
And am disappointed - not because King and the Clown will not win, because I didn't expect it to, but because it didn't have a chance to really be considered.
This isn't naivete, it's just plain disappointment.
At least there wasn't the possibility for any of that US production winning a foreign Oscar clap. |

And I guess that's why there's a Blanche. %^D
(Interestingly enough, that Curse of the Golden Flower gambit didn't pay off.) |

THESE ARE THE ONES I'VE SEEN:
DAYS OF GLORY - good but not great
WATER - excellent
LIVES OF OTHERS - seems to be a real favorite and yes, I've seen it
PAN'S L. - expect to see it soon
VOLVER - " " |

I've seen Water, Pan, andVolver. Water and Volver are close - both excellent, and on any given day I'll pick either one over the other - but Pan doesn't quite match either for me.
*sigh* |

Lady, thanks for the short list. I read yesterday in an Indian newspaper that Water had been picked, but I did not know the others on the list. |

I also saw "Avenue Montaigne," aka "Fauteuils d'Orchestre," in Paris last spring. This struck me as a likeable but not significant film |

Lady,
I wouldn't rule out Pan's Labyrinth beating Volver to the Oscar; it picked up more BAFTA nominations than any other foreign film - so it's not without its supporters. Being the more recent of the two may also help it. |
