We watched Confessions of a Dangerous Mind tonight. I started out not liking the film, but it slowly worked its spell on me. I stopped demanding that it be a biopic (why I'd want to watch one of the those truly escapes me) and let this hallucination of a life that had some elements of history in it take over. Brilliantly, it ends on images of Chuck Barris, close up, wrinkled, ravaged looking. It reminded me of a wonderful play I saw more than 25 years ago by Michael Weller called Dwarfman: Master of a Million Shapes, about a comic book artist in crisis who invents a girl to help him through his momentary break from reality. Only this film doesn't give the audience the benefit of knowing what is truly real and what is not. The odd cinematography seemed like a conceit to me until I surrended to the funhouse-mirror world the film gradually created. The film's director and one of its supporting actors, George Clooney, had a very clear vision of the story he wanted to tell, and I admire how he unspooled it. Sam Rockwell, as everyone pointed out when this movie first made the rounds, was hauntingly perfect as Barris. Highly recommended.

Clooney's next directorial work is going to be about Ed Murrow taking on Joe McCarthy; I confess I'm drooling in anticipation for that one.

Rockwell was great, granted, but what did you feel about Drew Barrymore's performance? I felt it was some of her best work.

Drew Barrymore was a very pleasant surprise in Confessions. So was Clooney as the director. Very good film. Clooney's smart, good-looking, and by all accounts a very nice guy. The prick.

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind was my third-favorite movie of 2002, and Sam Rockwell was my favorite actor. Both Drew Barrymore and the (as usual) underrated Julia Roberts were among my top five supporting actresses. Clooney's direction was superb (also in my top five in that category), and I can't wait to see what he does directorially in the future.

Roberts was hilarious and wicked. Her best performance to date.

I was very impressed with Roberts. She was a hilarious and edgy Natasha LaTalle. Barrymore was deceptively like other parts she has played, but when we get to the end of the film, we realize how much gravity she gave to it. She built her presence slowly, through all the seemingly superficial changes Penny went through. She stayed true to her free-spirit character--not throwing a fit when she finds Barris having sex with another woman in their home, but just feeling sad and hurt that there didn't seem to be any boundaries at all. She was into not hurting people, and she got hurt a lot by Barris.

I wanted to recommend a documentary out on DVD - "How Arnold Won the West." This is a film by Brit. director Cooke who followed the Calif. governor campaign.

I'm interested in seeing this. Thanks for the mention, Mo.

Sometimes I wonder how I could have missed so many good movies when they were on the big screen. It seems that I should have seen Confessions of a Dangerous Mind before this!
