Correction:
Rock Hudson plays Taza, not Jeff Chandler. Should have known!
re: Fuller's Westerns
There's "Run of the Arrow" (1957) and "I Shot Jesse James" (1949). |

You people want to discuss a great western that nobody knows about, then put The Culpepper Cattle Company on the list. It's got everthing and it delivers. But what the fuck do I know? |

Yambu,
I wouldn't propose a Hart for the official list, but rather as something those who want to can check out and discuss on the side. We did some of this in the silents forum, and it seemed to work. |

I feel the same way about "The Iron Horse" with George O'Brien. Another favorite of the silent era. |

The availability quotient that I will be using is: (1) it's on DVD, and (2) both my county library online and my favorite video store in Berkeley have it. Then I figure all of you can get it, at least on VHS. |

I just watched Bend of the River. As a replacement for High Noon, it's a joke. As a representation of high-end Westerns of its time, it will do. Stewart is Stewart, and he and Arthur Kennedy have several great moments together.
So the official revised tentative list is:
- Red River
- Stagecoach
- The Ox-Bow Incident
- My Darling Clementine
- Bend of the River
- Shane
One person (moi) is ready for Red River. Waiting for four more. |

I can be ready for Red River anytime, but want to watch it again anyway.
Last night I TiVO'd Rio Grande with the Duke and Maureen O'Hara. Couldn't remember if it was on the list or not, but I think I'll go and watch it now (even though it ain't cause, well, it's a John Ford, ya know?). During Robert Osbourne's opening commentary, he said that Herbert J. Yates made them make Rio Grande in order to do The Quiet Man. |

I don't understand. You mean, he wouldn't let them do Quiet Man until they did Rio Grande? |

I'm still trying to find my copy. It's not on the shelf where it belongs. If it doesn't turn up by this afternoon, I'll rent it. |

Yes, that's why I'd only suggest it as an optional choice, for those who want to hunt it up. Tumbleweeds and The Toll-Gate are available on DVD from DeepDiscountDVD.com, and Grapevine Video has several Harts, but you have to buy all these, and I doubt if people are going to fork over more than a rental fee just to see something for a forum. (Unless they're me, of course.) Don't know if anyplace like Netflix would have it. However, if anyone does have access to any Harts and wants to talk about them, I'm up for it. |

Syd,
I'm going to check the public library and Hastings after my doll club meeting today. If neither one has it, I may want to borrow your copy. |

Yeah, The Quiet Man had a huge budget due to being shot in Technicolor, so Yates wanted to do a low-budget picture with Ford, Wayne and O'hara. Turned out, they were both huge moneymakers for Yates. |
