PULP FICTION is a quintessential nineties film - an indie that became a big hit, a film that plays with and upends genre and form, has a certain postmodernist tongue-in-cheekiness (the casting of Travolta), and is directed by one of the most influential directors of the nineties (Tarantino) - therefore we may want to start the nineties forum with a discussion of PULP FICTION.

This is my shorter list (there are many others I think are great ) of the best 90's films - I would like considered for discussing:

LA Confidential
The Grifters
Croupier
The Ice Storm
Crumb
Unforgiven
Muriel's Wedding

I wouldn't mind a discussion of LA Confidential, since I seem to be the only one who didn't like it. I'm kind of wondering why everyone else is so high on it, and what I may be missing.

Gromit, I don't know about anyone else, but I read the book, L.A. Confidential and loved it. The movie is one of the best transcriptions to film of the mood and characters of the book that I can think of. Therefore I loved the movie also. James Elroy also liked the movie, so I suspect you may not like the book.

Watched it maybe five plus years ago (on VCD), and only a few years later learned that it was so respected. So it didn't make enough of an impression for me to remember it too well. I just found it boring, and kind of silly, while trying hard to be clever. I thought that the characters and their interactions rang false and were overly exaggerated. I seem to remember having problems with the Kevin Spacey reporter role and the police chief.

I know that's all somewhat general, which is why I'd be interested in hearing what other folks liked about it. I also didn't like the wrapping-up and the ending, although I generally don't hold that against a film too much. I might be up for re-watching it. But then again, I just watched The Usual Suspects a few weeks back, and that just elicited a big shrug from me. I think I just don't like the 90's/modern approach to neo-noir and crime thrillers.

Well I was waiting for the 90's Forum to open, but here's my (minimally revised) Top Ten Films of the Nineties:

1. Raise The Red Lantern (Zhang, 1991)
2. Being John Malkovich (Jonze, 1999)
3. American Beauty (Mendes, 1999)
4. Ju Dou (Zhang, 1990)
5. Three Kings (Russell, 1999)
6. Blue (Kieslowski, 1993)
7. Wallace & Gromit: The Wrong Trousers (Park, 1993)
8. Hoop Dreams
9. Dead Man (Jarmusch, 1995)
10. The Big Lebowski (Coens, 1998)

Well, all I ended up doing was adding in Hoops Dreams and moving out Boogie Nights. I liked BN, but was impressed with it more than I enjoyed it. I didn't get around to hunting up more 90's titles that I might have forgotten.
