Getting back to Current Film (much as I agree with the preceding posts, they accurately belong in Lobby), I finally saw Elle yesterday (making me an Oscar performance completist) and, frankly, do not quite see all the fuss being made about Isabelle Huppert's performance. She is absolutely fine in the role--present, attuned to every moment, natural at all times, an all-around excellent screen actor--but this is not my idea of award-worthy acting. Her expressionless reaction to being sexually assaulted, while absolutely appropriate to the character--winds up making Casey Affleck's understated performance in Manchester by the Sea seem like chewing the scenery by comparison.

The movie itself is worth seeing but, again, not great. It's Paul Verhoeven being himself, which means it's sometimes kind of shocking but not inordinately so. It's okay, which (much as I admire Huppert's screen presence) is pretty much what I feel about her performance. So--In the absence of Taraji P. Henson on the list--take it away, Emma Stone!

Picked up Arrival this evening. Probably will go on tonight.
Couldn't get excited about La La and, though I'll probably pick it up later.

Anyone have thoughts on 20th Century Women?
or
April and the Extraordinary World?

I considered those, but couldn't remember any comments on them.

Gromit, I liked 20th Century Women and wrote positively about it.

Like Billy, I was not as enthused about Elle as many others.

Also liked 20th Century Women. Bening should have been nominated.

No surprises at the Oscars except for the fact that Jimmy Kimmel was surprisingly good. I am very pleased that "Moonlight" got the Best Picture Award.

I think that final ten minutes qualified as a big surprise.

Just because the screenplay was adapted doesn't mean that we love it any less.

Haha! That final few minutes was...surreal. Words fail.

I liked the adapted pun, too.

I have a feeling that "Bonnie and Clyde" will no longer be the first thing that comes to mind when the names of Beatty and Dunaway are mentioned.

They might have been wishing for a hail of bullets, at the end.

It wasn't really their fault. They were handed the wrong envelope. But I like to think that had it been me I would have said, "This is obviously the wrong envelope." It apparently read something like "Emma Stone, La La Land." That should have been a red light. But maybe Dunaway's obviously extensive facial surgery has messed with her brain. Oh, yes, I can be dishy on occasion.

Beatty stared at the card briefly, then showed it to Dunaway, who read "La La Land" without hesitating. I'll bet his wife would have caught it.

Apparently Dunaway thought Beatty was clowning around, so she took a quick look and announced La La Land, the movie title she spotted. She wasn't aware there was any problem.

When the LLL guy held up the card saying Moonlight, it appeared the cards don't have a category title on them.

If the initial card said

Best Actress

Emma Stone -- La La Land

Then it would have been obvious that there was a mistake.
And the problem would have been avoided.

The correct card should have read:

Best Picture

Moonlight
(a bunch of producer names)

Simple category info heading on each card would have prevented the wrong announcement. Still need to make sure the correct envelope with the correct card is given out to the presenters.
The envelopes should also have the category title on the outside as well.

The La La Land folks were very gracious and handled the mistake quite well. That's all I saw of the Oscars, on youtube, to see how the fiasco went down.

I've tuned the Oscars out more than usual the past few years. I was looking at past winners and was very surprised a film called Spotlight I had never heard of won last year's best picture award. Then I clicked through and noticed it was the Church pedophile expose I had decided to skip. i didn't even realize/know that it had won last year.

This is partly because the golden of age of dvd's (and dvd piracy) has passed. So I see a lot fewer current films than previously. I used to see about 45 or so new films per year and now it's probably less than half of that.

But I never head much interest in the Oscars. It always seemed to be just stargazing, and fancy clothes, which I don't care about. But also, the films that win and half the nominees are generally not the type of films I like.

Here's what I've seen for 2016.
Just 14 films so far, and 2 of those I saw on a jet plane.
Wasn't engaged with Moonlight and the films below that were mediocre to poor. My main contribution to Recent Films is to warn people away form Toni Erdmann (though it has good buzz in some circles and there is going to be a US remake)
Good
1. Aferim!
2. Childhood of a Leader
3. Kubo and the Two Strings
Okay
4. The Jungle Book
5. Moonlight
6. The Lobster
Mediocre but inoffensive
7. Hail, Caesar!
8. Where To Invade Next
9. Money Monster
10. War Dogs
11. The Secret Life of Pets

Disliked:
12. Captain Fantastic
13. Nocturnal Animals
14. Toni Erdmann
