| The movie did have impressive and ubiquitous previews on TV. My guess is that the money men/women behind the movie wanted to make sure of a huge turnout in the first week. |

| As a Baz Lurhmann fan, it pains me to declare GATSBY an unmitigated disaster. A failure in every aspect. Not even visually interesting, which is Baz's strong point. I would steer as clear from this cinematic atrocity as I would from an elephant with explosive diarrhea. |

My fears are justified, I guess. Because of some good reviews, I was slightly considering taking this in, but not now. Everything about it spelled horrible, and seems like in this case it's true. |

Jon Stewart had Carey Mulligan on The Daily Show last Wed.
She seemed nervous and looked a good deal like a young Nicole Kidman (me thought).
What was amusing was you could tell Stewart wasn't terribly interested in the Gatsby film and seemed to be going through the motions. But after what he seemed to think was an appropriate amount of time he mentioned Inside Llewyn Davis, the upcoming Coen Bros film she is also in. And then he lit up and was excited. Funny. |

Peter Travers who is a critic I rarely agree with, call Gatsby a crushing disappointment. Having not seen the movie and probably never will, I still have to agree with him.
If Marc hates this Baz product, that pretty well closes the vault on this one. |

PETER TRAVERS calls it a crushing disappointment? I've never heard him do anything but suck up to movies like some kind of media harlot, so if HE doesn't like it, it must make Plan 9 From Outer Space look like Rear Window.
Explosive pachydermal diarrhea or no, I'm going to see it this week. Wish me luck.

It's the third segment beginning around the 14 min mark.
It's primarily because for the most part she's in profile in a midrange two-shot. That's where she reminded me of Kidman -- the porcelain skin, the blonde pulled back 'do, the profile, etc.
Especially when she is laughing in profile, really reminded me of Nicole. |

I plan to see it simply because it's a big Gatsby film.
And I don't think I've ever seen a Baz Luhrmann film, so have no opinion on that one way or the other. |

| Both Mirgun and I discussed walking out of GATSBY but decided to see if would get better. It didn't. I was reminded of Coppola's ONE FROM THE HEART, a movie about romance in which there isn't an iota of passion. GATSBY is the cinematic equivalent of blue balls. A lot of foreplay leading nowhere. |

DiCaprio can act, but passion seems to be out of his wheelhouse.
And Luhrmann thrives on artificiality, and spectacle, and camp. None of which have much to do with Gatsby. |
