Streep is brilliant in the role of Margaret Thatcher. The problem is that otherwise the movie is a piece of unadulterated crap. Even the usually wonderful Jim Broadbent is utterly lost in a silly, silly role.

I loathed The Tree of Life more than almost anything in 2011. Forgot to mention Moneyball as one of the best movies of the year. A terrific film. So was 4M.

Losers for me were such talked-about items as My Week with Marilyn, The Help, and We Need to Talk About Kevin.

Meanwhile, Woody Harrelson's searing turn in Rampart goes unmentioned.

Just when I was thinking, "not another year of awards for Meryl Streep" I saw Iron Lady. She was mesmerizing.......just the makeup and the walk alone. She has again transformed herself into someone else. Almost didn't see this one.

I enjoyed Jim Broadbent.......he played a fun husband.

Just yesterday I found out that Anthony Stewart Head is also in "The Iron Lady"--not enough of an influence to make me buy a ticket, but when it's on TV I'll watch.

This is kind of nice. I haven't seen the movie, but Nolte getting a nom after a long difficult period in his life accounts for something.

Nick Nolte, "Warrior"

The movie is fairly good--not nearly as good as the very similar The Fighter, but fairly good. Nolte is highly professional and somewhat uninspired in a typical hard-bitten, recovering-alcoholic-wise-old-trainer-type role.

Good to hear. Nolte was on a health kick, aiming to live forever, and then it all turned into a beverage regimen. Hope he found a happy middle ground.

Good one. Although from the clip I saw, it looks like he's on her side.

As noted in tv thread, the themes of "Extremely Loud etc." and Kiefer's new series, "Touch," seem eerily similar.

Jim Broadbent has been married to Iris Murdoch and Maggie Thatcher. Must be exhausting.

For those trying to keep up with Kyrgyzstani films, The Light Thief is a nice diversion. It's a bit cliched and predictable at times, but a nice look at a Central Asian country undergoing change. The main character is an electrician who helps poor villagers rig their meters so they get free power. He gets arrested and just when he's about to get in trouble, the regime is overthrown, and he's released. But then some city thugs with tangential ties to the village bring in a tough brand of capitalism and new threats to the quiet village life.

It was quite interesting for me to see the Chinese portrayed as the rich obnoxious potential investors who have to be catered to. Usually, in Chinese films that role would fall naturally to Americans or maybe Euros.
Anyway, the film had backing from several Eurocountries and looks quite nice. Some lush scenic shots. Odd national game of polo with a dead goat. A good deal of Mongolian culture seems to permeate Kyrgyzstan. One neat image of two guys on a horse carrying a bicycle.
Not a great film, but good and an interesting chance to see Central Asia without actually having to go there.

What's odd about that? You should see what they use in Kazakhstan.

I put that in my Netflix queue and hopefully they'll get it eventually. I haven't seen any Kyrghyz films. This one sounds like I might like it.

Come to think of it, the only former Soviet republics I've seen films from are Russia and Kazakhstan. (I'm not counting Borat. Nomad is a joint Russian-Kazakh production,)
