Actually CHILLY is the one you want.
He said that he would upgrade the php bbs software when he had a chance. I think it was his new year's resolution. Or maybe his chinese new year's resolution.

It should also fix the search function, as well as not having your post jump to the top after you add in bold/italics/underline, which is also annoying.

Best Actress looks especially strong -- though I've only seen the first three, but the other two have good buzz.

Is it as simple as looking at the Best Director handful to see which are the excess Best Pic films -- or am I missing something?

I've seen all the best picture nominees except for Winter's Bone and 127 Hours, and all those nominated for Sound Mixing, Art Direction, cinematography, and none of the foreign film nominees. I was expecting Black Swan to get more nominations.

The only nominations I consider outrageous are Inception for Best Picture, Renner for Supporting Actor, and Steinfeld for Supporting Actress. Bardem's perf I can't comment on, not having seen it. But too many of the others are just okay performances which steal from worthy shoulda-beens like Mila Kunis for Supporting Actress, Mark Wahlberg and Michael Douglas for Best Actor and Lesley Manville for whatever category she ought to be in.

The worthiest nominations:

The Fighter, The King's Speech, Toy Story 3 for Best Picture.

Kidman, Bening for Best Actress.

Firth, Eisenberg for Best Actor.

Adams, Leo, (Bonham) Carter for Best Supporting Actress.

Bale, Rush, Ruffalo for Best Supporting Actor.

Anybody but Christopher Nolan for Best Director. (Best news of the morning is that Nolan was shut out. One of the worst pieces of news is that he was nominated for screenplay. Nolan is Sam Mendes to the maximum degree--that is, recipient of overrating.)

Of the ten nominees for Best picture, I gave thumbs up to five (The Fighter, The Kids Are All Right, The King's Speech, The Social Network and Winter's Bone), thumbs down to three (Black Swan, Inception and True Grit), have not yet seen one (127 Hours) and do not plan to see one (Toy Story 3). I would like to see The Fighter win for best movie, best direction and best editing. Christian Bale is a shoo-in.

Wow, I'm officially way behind, having seen only 4 of the nominated films + 2 of the docs.
Surprised that Rabbit Hole wasn't one of the Ten Best pic nominees. Better than the three I've seen that made the cut.

Fwiw, I love Fight Club.
And Social Network just slipped into my Top 16.

Don't think anyone can be "way behind" -- watching movies is not an avocation or obligation, it's entertainment. I never try to follow some comprehensive list, based on being up for awards or being defined as important by some influential critic. Who cares? Borges once said that if you start reading a book and it's not interesting, close it and get another one. I haven't seen The Kids are Alright or The Fighter, because I wasn't that interested -- I'm sure they are great and I'm happy for anyone who had a good experience watching them.

Something I've been wanting to say for a long time. Enjoying art should never be a chore or obligation, unless your profession requires it. I let the professionals see all the movies, so I don't have to. I heartily recommend this approach -- gives you more time to walk in the park, make love, toss frisbies....if you can do those three together, I'll pay money to watch.

Since I've seen only four 2010 films (that I recall) and none of them were nominated (alas, Phillip Morris, but no surprise), I really have nothing to say, except that the opinions here do make me want to see at least three of the nominees.

With the numerous containers of dvd's I have stored in my closets, it's easy to say that I am Way Behind.
I like to keep up with the Current Films, mostly because I have easy & cheap access. It's fun to discover great new films, and to help steer others to or away from the current crop. I'd really like to see more of the foreign films, but they take longer to materialize.

But, like everyone, I am selective and so won't be seeing Inception, Shutter Island, The Town, or 127 Hours (though I'm pretty unfamiliar with the last one, so that could change).

Yes, Black Swan and The King's Speech don't really call my name, but assignments aren't necessarily a bad thing, as college proved.
Mostly I'm interested in avoiding crappy films, and I think I've seen fewer bombs this year, and many of the mediocre films I've seen have been interesting such as Four Lions, Greenberg and Skeletons.

I agree with Billy that Bening was terrific in The Kids Are uber AlleRight. And Kidman was stellar in Rabbit Hole, which was a potent film.

Rabbit Hole is the only Hollywood/awardsy film of 2010 that I'd say is a must-see. But there are many -- True Grit, Blue Val, Black Swan, etc. -- which I haven't seen (yet).

One thing -- for me anyway -- is that current US films make for a nice break and an easier viewing experience than say the Albanian film East West East I just picked up tonight, or the 8-hour Our Hitler film.
The same goes for Simpsons episodes and lately Get Smart Season 2.

Hailee Steinfeld for Best Supporting? Wtf, she's the main character! She and Annette Bening should switch places. And then Annette Bening should win. And Steinfeld doesn't even really deserve to be nominated in the first place.

Bart.......I'm in Gromit's Way Behind Club. I don't like to take the opinion of professionals for my own. Ever. There are some films I just don't want to see like 127 Hours. And even though True Grit has no appeal I'm going to see it so I can discuss its pros and cons. I certainly don't agree with Roger Ebert's take on Another Year.

By the way did anyone see Ebert on PBS Saturday?

I haven't seen "True Grit" yet, so can't comment on that sentiment. But, at the risk of getting flames for saying this, I'm not entirely sure that Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush are in the right categories. They should probably switch places.

This morning on one of the news shows, there was a discussion of why Geoffrey Rush wasn't nominated as a leading rather than supporting player, and the bag of tricks that studios pull out to give their films more exposure to awards. They'd cancel each other out in the leading category (and you can't not nominate the king in a leading role, can you?). Always fun to listen to that kind of plotting.
