I didn't notice that.

Babel is one I'm interested in. It looks good. I'm hoping it will be better than Syriana, which was ok, but I personally felt it could have been better.

I was slightly disappointed in Borat. Too much plot. The scripted bits, probably 60% of the film, aren't nearly as funny as the improv bits (with the exception of the Running of the Jew, which is one of the funniest things I've ever seen). Plus, it seems like he's repeating a lot of what he's already done prior. And he's not nearly as scathing as he's been in the past. (Getting a crowd of drunken rednecks to sing along with "Throw the Jew down the well so my people can be free" is probably his apex.) But still, it's damn funny, even if does seem like Borat for Beginners.

I once watched Horsefeathers with my parents. When it was over, my mom said the plot was hard to follow, and she did not know what a "college widow" was. "Plot?" Sez I, "PLOT? Who in the name of all we hold Holy watches a Marx Brothers movie for the PLOT?!?"

Yeah, Borat's plot is its weak point, but it is merely the stitching to keep the jokes from rolling around in nothingness. Although many of the plot elements - notably, the SPOILER Running of the Jew, the shapeshifting B&B owners, the sight of a fat naked man being chased down the hall by another naked man waving a rubber fist, (check out the size of Borat's black stripe) and the proposal to Anderson - were also damned funny. I thought the weakest parts were at the start, where Borat first comes to NYC and washes his face in the toilet, masturbates in front og a lingerie ad, and - not that I have a problem with this conceptually - shits on Trump.

Nancy pointed out to me similarities between Emma Thompson's and Will Ferrell's characters that I missed when I was watching the movie. She puts aspects of herself into her characters.

Borat is very funny, but the comedy barely keeps pace with the grossness. Is Kazakhstan owed an apology? I thought Americans were mocked as much as the Kazakhs, so it was probably a wash.

Here's a Yahoo news blurb about Borat and the people he "duped"
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061113/ap_en_mo/film_borat_s_victims

The part I referred to before about the news person losing their job is below: (I mistook this person for a male originally)
Quote:
Cohen's behavior also wasn't funny to former TV producer Dharma Arthur, who claims she was duped into giving Cohen airtime on a morning show segment in Jackson, Miss. Cohen's live appearance, in which he said he had to go "urine" and hugged a bemused weatherman, led her life into a downward spiral, she told the AP. She is seeking an apology.

Although Arthur has said she was fired from the show, she told the AP that she left the station.

More at the link.

The important difference is that the knocks on the Kazakhs are all scripted and fantastical, whereas the American stuff is all impromptu and real.

It sounds like she needed to get out more anyway. Surely, even in Jackson, TV hosts should be a bit more robust and worldy wise.

We just got back from it. It's smart, crazy, funny, fast paced (a bit too much sometimes; there's a lot to take in), and very inventive. The whole underground London scene is amazing. There are lots of little jokes in the background, so it will repay rewatching.

Nancy says to tell you the movie's very good and the singing slugs are adorable. I can hardly wait for the action figures.

Just saw this today and agree completely with those comments. There are so many wonderful jokes and visuals that this is one of those movies that will be just as much fun to watch a second time (preferably at home with the abilty to pause the action) as it was the first time. I think I stopped trying to count the movie references halfway through, but there are some nifty ones. (And with Kate Winslet doing the voice of Rita, the quick homage to Titanic was a lovely touch.) On top of all the visual artistry, though, it's a well-written story with funny characters and is sweet without ever becoming too syrupy.

Today I heard that the young guy who plays Borat's son in the movie is actually a porn star. I had assumed that the photos had been faked with PhotoShop.

Does anyone else know about this?

The frat boys episode was the single most unfunny thing about it. That was one dumb, nasty bunch.

Had I read this before seeing it, I would have passed. Luckily, I didn't.
