Is that the surprise ending, when it comes from nowhere to win the Oscar for Best Film.

Jeremy, Cache' was disqualified as Austria's entry on grounds that its dialogue is in French, not German.

Yeah, but he implied "Best Picture," not "Best Foreign Film," in his imaginary world.

Saw Capote on pay per view.

It stinks.

Harry I know it's been infrequent of you to appear here so you may not know this, but we all decided a few months ago that the reviews of film on here shouldn't be over-long or containing too many details about the film. I trust you will take this into consideration the next time you are tempted to ramble on when reviewing a movie. Try to take my following review as an example.

It was swell!

It is good that Deepa Mehta's film "Water" is now in general release in United States. It dramatizes the plight of widows in the India of the 1930's, their being isolated in group homes, their being considered curses, not safe to touch, even their shadows had to be avoided. The characters are well drawn, the story is rich, but its denouement is somewhat unbelievable, although emotionally heart-wrenching. Visually the film is beautiful, and Rehman's subdued music provides the right tone. In a way the movie is a tribute to Gandhi and his reforms, which is a good touch. Just like her "Fire" and "Earth", Deepa Mehta's "Water" is a lesson in Indian history and sociology as well as an excellent entertainment.

Yeah, it sucked so bad they gave Philip Seymour Hoffman an Oscar for it.

Our local critic's review of X-Men: The Last Stand starts:

Quote:
The X-Men have survived fire, flood and telepathic threats from within. But can they survive one of Hollywood's worst directors?

And ends:

Quote:
It's fast and fun, but instantly forgettable. If Ratner were a mutant, his power would involve making movies that are blanked out the moment you reach the theatre door.

While Stephanie Zacherek gives new meaning to "with friends like that..."

Quote:
The brutal beauty of the image is a mini-encapsulation of the appeal of the "X-Men" comics, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby more than 40 years ago: For lots of kids, these stories of mutants who band together to fight evil have been a metaphorical salve for the way our bodies turns against us in adolescence -- or maybe more specifically for the way, during adolescence and even beyond, our sexual impulses sometimes seem to be fighting against us.

This sort of bullshit doesn't do the movie any good. (I'm a comic book fan with many comic book geek friends, and no one has ever given the above as the explanation for their interest).

My last post to Harry was meant in jest.

Embarassed Sorry - I took your comments out of context - i just reviewed the posts again . Some critics/filmgoers have commented that they thought Hoffman was showboating a bit - but I thought he was brilliant

Marantz's primer on how to write concise reviews has inspired me. In future, all my reviews will be a single word. For example, any film that is deep and enigmatic will get: "Wha--?" Most films, of course, will yield: "Ho-hum." Films with Jennifer Aniston: "Zzzzzzz."
