Mo - You misunderstand. You are allowed three nominees in each category, but we're only nominating two categories at a time. Right now, give us your nominees for Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress only. |

To belabor this a little more, remember that we're NOT picking the winners yet. We're just assembling our list of official Nominees, which will be the top 5 vote-getters for each category. |

Marilyn - sorry I misread the instructions. I understand them now.
Lorne, I actually was aware that we were not picking winners. |

I'm not sure who to count as supporting and lead in some movies. And I'm counting "Hero" as a 2004 release in America.
Supporting Actor:
David Carradine, Kill Bill, Volume 2
Johnny Leung, Hero
Antonio Banderas, Shrek 2 (voice only)
Supporting Actress:
Natalie Portman, Closer
Maggie Cheung, Hero
Queen Latifah, Barbershop 2
You can tell I'm straining with those third picks, but there are a lot of movies that haven't made it here yet. |

Supporting Actor
Ian Holm, Garden State
Nick Frost, Shaun of the Dead
Clifton Powell, Ray
Supporting Actress
Sharon Warren, Ray
Joy Bryant, Baadasssss!
Alex Kelly, Vera Drake |

Jamie Foxx in Collateral strikes me as more of a lead than supporting. It's one of those films with two leads. |

Yeah, I had to think about that for a bit, but then realized his name comes after Cruise's in the credits and I went with that.

Alan Alda for The Aviator
Chilly, this nomination absolutely blows me away. I'm aghast. Alda's was easily the worst performance by anyone I saw all year. He delivered a completely monotonous, shrill, distracting turn that was nothing but affected finger-wagging, stumbling, and one-dimensional McCarthy-lite smugness. It was an extremely easy role and he blew it. To pieces. The guy should stick to comedy (not that he can even do that well), for his performance here was truly awful. Every time he was on screen I was removed from whatever power Scorsese's film had. He has the hotel room argument scene and then the long courtroom shit where just interrupts, gets interrupted, and wags and points that goddam finger the entire time. Jesus Christ. Awful.
And there were so many great performances this year from men in supporting roles. I had a hard time narrowing down to three (I picked Bana, Grant, and Carradine because they mightily improved the movies they were all in -- sort of VIPs for that film). I left off wonderful turns by people like:
Peter Krause
John Hurt
Bill Paxton
Rip Torn
Mark Wahlberg
Clive Owen
Andy Lau
Joaquin Phoenix
Derek Luke
Topher Grace...
the list goes on -- all actors doing such strong work in fascinating roles. And of all the movies in 2004, you thought Alan Alda's stench-filling hack job was one of the three best? That will perplex me until at least... April or something. |
