Night of the Hunter has got to be one of the darkest and scariest of all the noir on the list. You don't think Robert Mitchum is a good enough actor to scare you half to death - think again! Parts of that movie STILL creep me out. I think he was better here than in Cape Fear. Definitely a classic!

Rififi is a classic noir-- it always reminds me of the drilling-through-the-floor scene in M.
I side with Marilyn on Gilda-- except for Rita's singing and writhing, it's a total waste.
Night of the Hunter qualifies as a noir, but it's almost expressionistic in places.
Re. a good film to discuss women in film noir, how about Out of the Past? Jane Greer pretty much exemplifies the type.... |

| Oh my gosh! I forgot all about He Walked by Night. This IS noir! I think the chance in the L.A. tunnels is one of the most thrilling sequences in all of film and the perfect visual representation for the themes of noir. This should be on our list. |

I was waiting to see if they'd have Murder By Contract (an almost unknown, except for yunfat and myself, noir classic) and there it was. I also think that The 13th Floor is a good example of SciFi noir.
The verdict is in. I asked my mother what she thought of Gilda with Rita Hayworth. She said that she didn't remember it.

i would submit that as much as i love " the third man"...
"the spy who came in from the cold" makes it look like a sunshine picnic.
there are not an overwhelming vehicles for "noir". actually crime and espionage seem to be the only two... |
