I like Tim Robbins, and have always liked Susan Sarandon and still do. I have mixed feelings about actors using their celebrity as a platform for politicking, possibly because it gives them access to an unearned audience. However, actors like everyone else have political views, and if, possibly at risk of their careers, they wish to make a stand, why should they be denied. Generally, Robbins and Sarandon have been reasonable and dignified in their action and statements. I wouldn't regard them as particularly left wing. Compared with Vanessa Redgrave...

And what's wrong with Vanessa? You aren't one of those Zionist hooligans she always talking about, are you??

I know some of the oomph has escaped from this forum, but I think it may have served its purpose: lots of good talk about SF has been conducted, and it's been a pleasure.

Saw Dark City the other night, and enjoyed it. I'd forgotten that it featured one of those great scenes where two characters square off in an "energy beam" duel. I always like those, even the cheesy ones like in Big Trouble in Little China.

Man, I wish I could shoot out energy beams-- even being hit by a pink one (a la Philip K. Dick) would be cool....

I agree, in general. Robbins has gone to far for me, at times, but I totally agree that actors, celebrities, have as much right to voice their opinions as anyone else.

By the way, though I used my friend's antagonism towards Robbins to illustrate just how strong Robbins' performance must be in Shawshank that it swayed him, I don't think I ever judge an actor on the basis of his politics or personality. What I care about is the work.

They had THE BLOB on last night. It's one of my guilty pleasures. Not sure why I enjoy it so much but I've always thought it was the most interesting of the 'aliens attack and we'll never know what they really want' movie.

For those who love trivia - Steve McQueen was offered $3000 or a piece of the movie rights. He choose the quick money as he thought it was going to be a bomb - and regretted it.

I don't remember the name of the movie.....but many years ago, there was a movie with Boris Karloff, and Vincent Price. I believe they played rival wizards or something, and at the end they had a laser beam duel. Verra, verra cheesy, but I still remember it! Smile

A totally cheesy film "The Raven". A pity because it had an excellent cast Price, Karloff AND Lorre as well as a young Jack Nicholson.

THE RAVEN was fun. 3 great horror actors hamming it up.

As it's nearly Halloween and the newspeople were talking about "all time great horror films" this morning - a short survey:

1. What was your first great scary film?

2. What do you consider the SCARIEST film of all time?

3. What do you consider the Classiest horror film?

To the first I'd say Fantasia's NIGHT ON BALD MOUNTAIN. It's STILL SCARY.

To the second, ALIEN. When that thing is hiding in the shadows - WHEW!

Dracula (The Bela one or the Palance one).

1. What was your first great scary film?

I must have been seven or eight, watching this movie on a tiny b&w TV at my grandma's old creaky house. To this day I don't know the name because I've never seen it since. Maybe someone here will know it -- the only thing I remember is a pretty girl trapped in a room with many doors, all of them locked, when suddenly a trapdoor in the floor opens and these skeletons come out and chase her around the room. I could swear they were blue! Scared the crap outta me.

2nd runner-up: Day of the Triffids

2. What do you consider the SCARIEST film of all time?

The Exorcist for gross-out, Rosemary's Baby for psychological trauma. (I have Catholic friends who would reverse those descriptions.)

3. What do you consider the Classiest horror film?

By "classiest" I suppose you mean "classic" monstor movies -- haven't seen many of those. I like Psycho and Repulsion. They're pretty monstrous.

Fun questions!

Was it House on Haunted Hill? (Vincent Price Version) I remember it had a wonderfully scary skelton that kept coming out of the acid pool (why would anyone have an acid pool in their basement?!) Rolling Eyes

How about another question. Who is your favorite scifi/horror villian.

Mine is Vincent Price.

Dlh, going by my memory of Vincent Price in House of Wax, I have to agree with you.

Toss up between Lon Chaney and Peter Cushing.

It's my fault this scifi forum has run out of gas. I wish things had been a little less crazy at home and work this month. If you're still game, I'll keep going and try to get the discuss back on track. If not, should we call it a day and start a new forum?
