| wade - this weekend is a free Showtime weekend, including on-demand, I think, so I'm gonna try and catch up with the L-Word. I was back in NY last weekend and caught half of the first episode and was instantly hooked again. |

| Joe--I don't know about Basic Instinct 2, but on Showtime's Huff Sharon Stone is sexy. Really sexy--and brilliant as well. (Her role, which began this week, has more episodes in the offing, so check it out. The show is magnificent by any standards, with great, great performances by Blythe Danner, Oliver Platt, Swoosie Kurtz, and Hank Azaria as Huff, so you ought to see it anyway.) |

I watched the latest episode of The Sopranos and it was one of the finest ones in a few years. I laughed and was shocked in one hour. I thought Tony's conversation with that evangelical about Viagra too funny for words and he was about to make a really big point but it would have gone over the head of that nutcake. And when that do-gooder talked about creationism, I laughed so hard at Tony's and Christoper's reaction. Even they did not believe in creationism. "You mean the dinosaurs and people roamed the earth together?" The show certainly didn't pull punches concerning the right-wingers and the American Jews (Zionists) aligning together, the Jews because the right-wingers, like Pat (take 'im' down Robertson) because of their support of Israel.
And was Aunt Dottie that Judith Molina of theater legend? Did that floor me when I saw her name!
And that poor kid getting beaten up because he was kept in the dark about the family business. Was Tony really behind it (he agreed much too readily) or did Paulie do that on his own?
Great, great show! Back up to par. |

| Agree with Lulu that this was an excellent episode of Sopranos. A sea of rising troubles for the family. It was also good to see Hal Holbrook after a long time. |

Why do I keep thinking that Paulie will be getting whacked? I'm amazed Christopher is still around, what will all the stunts he pulled and that young kid gets beaten up.
Life sure ain't fair, particularly on Sopranos.  |

Thanks McBain for the link. It made for really interesting reading. And if nothing else it proves what creative minds go into the making of the Sopranos.
Trish -- I honestly know what you mean about Big Love. I feel the same way. And can't put it into words either. I really had planned not to watch it tonight but there it was ... right on after Sopranos. *sigh*
Billy -- Once again I agree with you about Sharon Stone. But I'm still trying to catch up with HUFF, so I'll have to get back to you. Still, I saw her in Catwoman, and IMO, she is still a stunning woman. And 48 isn't old. But that's just silly me. |

The Sopranos and Huff both were riveting last night, but while The Sopranos continues at a remarkably high level, Huff has transcended itself and entered some rarefied realm of greatness which for me is actually doing the impossible--bettering Sopranos, Six Feet Under, etc. Hank Azaria is the perfect leading man for this rather European look at modern mores in general and California specifically. Azaria as Craig Huffstodt is likeable but very flawed, not arrantly charismatic but fully up to the task of carrying the show as some kind of everyman. If he were too much the "star" then the whole chemistry would be thrown out of whack. Meanwhile, Oliver Platt, Blythe Danner, Swoosie Kurtz, Paget Brewster, Andy Comeau, the Russian-named actor playing the teenage son, and...yes...the dreaded Sharon Stone continue to offer superlative, funny, touching, and altogether brilliant support.
Gotta say it again: Stone is amazing and award-worthy. I haven't seen Basic Instinct 2 and have no plans to do so, but no matter how she may or may not stink up the place in that one, she redeems herself with her work in Huff. As for the "work" she's reportedly had done, I don't care. She looks mah-ve-lous. |

| This season, it's hitting its stride. Sunday's episode was absolutely riveting and we now see Tony as he really is; haven't seen him this evil since he garrotted the man while taking Meadow to interview colleges. I mean Tony was really purely evil. I think they were making the point that even though he can be sympathetic and cuddle at times, you are dealing with a grizzly bear (a mistake the Grizzly Man made). There ain't no cuddly mobsters. Brilliant episode but $450,000 for that tacky wedding? And was Allegra L:ittle Stevie's daughter/sister/niece? Her last name was listed in the credits as Van Zandt. |

If I had my druthers I'd watch an episode of HUFF every night of the week, all year long. It has done everything Billy said and more. It may be the one show that avails itself of the best actors not just on television but any where. The writing is beyond amazing and goes into places of the heart I've never seen on television before.
I can find the words to describe how transcendent HUFF is. Perhaps thinking of a broadway play with Hank Azaria, Blythe Danner, and Swoozie Kurtz only more intimate than the stage and often more palpable.
This is the great television. It's certainly the best I've ever seen and I highly doubt it will ever be topped. |

My Showtime time is rationed, and I had problems clicking with early Huff episodes so I'm interrupting the current thing.
However - EHLE!!!! - I caught up on all but the last two episodes of The L Word last weekend - you never warned me!!!
L-Word Spoilers!!!
Dana died?? Dana DIED!!!!!! Come ON!!!! First of all, I loved Dana - I loved her when she was the scattered in the closet lesbian crazy about her cat, and I loved her when she was so dumb about the publicist idiot rushing her to the altar and finally I loved her when she hooked up with Alice who before that completely annoyed me. She was an athlete for chrissakes, in tune with her body, and she was young and we all kinds of options they tell us and how did she f-ing die????
Okay, everyone go back to their Sopranos and Huff stuff now. |

Marj--I am so happy you feel that way about Huff too. I swear it really is the best television I've ever seen. Can't imagine how anything could actually top the first season of The Sopranos, but Huff is really doing just that.
And...how about l'il Ms. Sharon Stone? Is that funny/scary/sexy or what?

And Swoosie is pronounced not to rhyme with "woozy" but with "loosey-goosey."
Which reminds me of one of my favorite non-apocryphal, absolutely true show business anecdotes, which is also about one of the most universally mispronounced star names.
Steve Buscemi pronounces his name "Boo-SEM-my," NOT "Boo-SHEM-my." But of course 99 percent of people mispronounce it, as did I before I heard the truth.
In any case, one time Steve was out of town filming, and his wife called his hotel. She got the desk clerk and asked for "Steve Boo-SEM-my." The clerk said, "I'll leave a message for him, but for your information his name is pronounced Boo-SHEM-my."
"Okay," came the response. "Just tell him his wife called."

Billy - I'm so glad you said that. It takes real guts to say anything tops the Sopranos even though I agree.
As far as Sharon Stone is concerned I think you covered it. She is all of the above and fearless to boot! Sometimes, I think Stone is a better actor than a star, though I think most would disagree with me.
And as far as Ms. Kurtz is concerned, she has broken my heart in every episode. GOD, she is amazing.
So it's Swoosie with an S, not Swoozie, with a Z cause .... Damn, I forgot how the rest of the song goes!! But I'll get it tomorrow. Now you're going to make me watch the Liza Minnelli special, even though I swore I wouldn't! |

It's worth watching. I am a huuuuuge non-fan of Liza's, but this special showcases everything "fabulous" about her; it's all done full-out and stylishly so that the show is fascinatingly awful for those who do not worship at the Minnelli shrine. Plus, I think you can glimpse the essential niceness of the lady beneath all the glitz and phoniness. People who know her swear she's a doll, and I can believe it. (I've met her myself, and she was exceedingly pleasant, but...shall we say...a little...oh. shitfaced at the time.) |
