Never been a fan of Justin Timberlake. He tries too hard to be cool, which inevitably comes across as too calculating and too safe. He's like Robbie Williams without the sense of irony. |

Count me as another that is NOT a fan of Justin. It's not that I can't appreciate his working with people like Timbaland and others to make funky beats. It's like Jeremy says... he tries too hard to be cool and for him, it doesn't work. At least when Robbie Williams tries, it (sometimes) works. |

Ewww! No Justin Timberlake for me either. Yuck! I don't not like him either. |

Man whatever. I don't care if he thinks he's cool or not, Timbaland cranked out some heat for homeboy. Sh*t is funky and fun. That's all I need from old boy. I even like the get on the band wagon track he has with Three Six Mafia. |

Music has been a major part of my life for years. And one of my earliest accomplishments was convincing my mom to join the Columbia Music Club. At the time (1974), I had an 8-Track player that I wanted to obtain some albums to play on it. Three of the the albums I ended up getting were from Elton John: Caribou and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (on 2 tapes). I had heard a few of Elton's songs on the radio here and there, but really didn't know who he was until a friend of mine played one of his albums (Madman Across The Water), which after that, I was hooked.
Over the course of the next two years, I ended up wearing out the first tape of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. The culprit song: Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding. It's the first track of the album and it got played a lot. And since then, it has remained my favorite Elton John song - actually in the top 10 on my all-time list of favorite songs.
I had never seen Elton live until this past Tuesday. I really don't know why I never made an effort to see him live before - time, money, current interests, venue. But regardless, I figured I wouldn't pass him up this time.
He did not disapoint. Hit after hit was played. I even enjoyed the five tracks he played from the new album, "Captain & The Kid". But what made the night perfect for me? Watching the lights go down and hearing that familar opening of the wind blowing, followed by the bell chimes and the keyboard intro to "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding"
Without question, that set the tone for how the next two hours and 50 minutes would be. Four days later, I still think about getting to my seat just seconds before the lights went out. Five minutes before, I was running across the parking lot, with a child's cup from Applebee's filled with gin and collins mix - downing it before approaching security and entering the venue. Even with my buzz on, I was in a place of euphoria, hearing one of my top 10 songs of all time live and in person.
Would I ever go to see Elton again? Perhaps, but there's this little thought in the back of my mind that doesn't want to taint that moment in time. That moment on Tuesday night took me back 32 years, sitting in front of my stereo with giant headphones on. And I really don't care to have that moment overshadowed by future performances by Elton. That may seem shallow or shortsighted, but it's that moment relived that will stick with me for the rest of my life. |

My disdain for Robbie Williams is something I've expressed in this forum on a few occasions. Whilst I hold no brief for the shallow whimperings of Justin Timberlake, I've never viewed him as a contemporary/competitor to Williams, despite the fact that they both started out in boy bands.
Chilly, I liked your post about the Elton John gig. For me, he's one of those figures whose (undoubted) talents have often been overshadowed by his "celebrity" persona. I didn't lump him in with the prog rock/self indulgent foe when punk happened. However, his music never "spoke" to me. I saw him at an acoustic gig in Liverpool six years' ago & enjoyed the sheer energy & drive which he put into his performance. |

Thanks, macca. I bet that acoustic gig was great. Some of those can be pretty intimate settings. |

It was intimate by his standards, chilly. It was a gig in a specially constructed marquee on the Liverpool waterfront before an audience of 6,000 punters who ranged from the curious (myself) to the devotional. |

6,000?.... I was thinking more like 1,000. At least that's my maximum for what I would call 'intimate' |

Nice Dame Elton John post, chills. I've never seen him live, either, and have been a fan since I was a kid. My sister (who is 9 years older than I) saw him for the first time last year and was blown away. Ina way, it's nice to know the old poofter can still touch the hearts of millions. |

I just saw Muse in concert and they were amazing!! They sounded flawless when they played and sang. I knew every song they played! They are a great band to see in concert. Has anyone else seen Muse in concert? |

MUSE's BLACK HOLES AND REVELATIONS will probably be the number 1 album on my best of 2006. |

My daughter was a big Muse fan a couple of years back, but, as teenagers do, she moved on. I thought they were ok, but, as was typical for that wave of indie-metal British bands, uninspiring.
Not hearing Muse around the house, I lost touch with them, so I was pleasantly surprised by their new album - much richer and more controlled than their earlier stuff.
They're still not my favourites, but I'd have to concede they are a proper band. |

I think The Roots album would qualify as my best of '06 at the moment. I really like the way they worked in their guitar player and brought back that
hard edge they had. Otherwise I've been diggin in the crates pulling out old stuff reminiscing on better days. |
