Has anyone seen Sita Sings the Blues (2008)? Seems to have been doing the festival circuit for all of 2008. "An animated version of the epic Indian tale of Ramayana set to the 1920's jazz vocals of Annette Hanshaw."

Annette Hanshaw is great, so I'm really looking forward to this. Hope it turns up. I'm wondering which of her songs were used.
If anyone's interested in Hanshaw, try downloading: Everything's Made For Love; Do, Do, Do, Six Feet of Papa; Walking My Baby Back Home; etc.
And note her trademark song endings (seem familiar?)
========================
I also picked up Waltz with Bashir (2008), an Israeli film which has been called the first animated documentary. Something in the vein of Persepolis, I think(?) This just opened in NYC on Christmas, so I think it's fair to expect a full review from Billy before 2009 begins. Or maybe I'll just pop the disc in and let youse know. |

Yeah, well she's part of that corrupt Chicagoland film mafia.
Probably got comp tickets to a festival screening from an anonymous source, no doubt.
Thanks, I'll see what she has to say. |

Ghulam wrote: The Russian movie Mongol was nominated last year for a Foreign film Oscar. It has great sets and costumes and the battle scenes are grand and gory. It shows Genghis Khan as a child and as a young man, his love for and commitment to his young wife, his many battles with his enemies and his emerging as the supreme Mongol leader. This is supposed to be the first part of a triology. Good movie.
.
Saw it, liked it very much and wrote a review of it. After it was over I immediately started to look forward to the next chapter. |

I didn't know Mongol was intended to be the first of a series, although it makes perfect sense since the film ends just as his Mongolian dominance begins. Really good film about a seriously under-understood figure in history. |

That one looks really interesting. Hope I get to see it. |

For a clear look at Genghis Khan, there is a terrific book called, "Marco Polo: from Venice to Xanadu" by I don't know who. Whom. Among many other things, he was the first to issue paper money. Even in Venice, the banking capital of the West, that was unheard of. |

Please forgive my absense, but I will go back and read eventually -- has anyone praised Slumdog Millionaire or Milk or Vicky Christina Barcelona or any of the other films I've tried to wrap my head around during my massive depression? So sorry, not wanting to seem like I'm skipping, but it was a vast absense and I thank you all for making there be several pages for me to read later. Oh snap, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall, it's brill, IMO. |

We've had some discussion of both Slumdog Millionaire (which I really liked) and Milk ( which I haven't seen yet). |

My wife and I just saw Slumdog Millionaire-- very good and well worth the price of admission.
Happy New Year to all and to all a good night. |
