Didn't someone mention here recently that they'd just seen Louis Malle's Au Revoir, les Enfants? Roger Ebert discusses it as part of his bi-weekly "Great Movies" feature:

Earl, I wrote about Au Revoir, les Enfants a couple of weeks ago, and I fully agree with Ebert's appreciation of it. Thanks for the link.

I'm in agreement. Thought I would enjoy this film, but didn't. I suppose Woody Allen is trying to invigorate himself by changing his film setting from Manhattan to London........jazz to opera (Verdi, mainly and Enrico Caruso). And maybe he did that.......for himself. Maybe he was tired of hearing the criticism about how his New Yorkers and their abodes bore little resemblence to reality.

I'm not sure about Rhys Meyers. Haven't seen enough of him. (Though I started watching him in Prozac Nation........with Michelle Williams). Towards the end I thought Jude Law could have played this character with more sexual heat and depth. Scarlett J. came across rough........sexy, without really enjoying it. Basically, I didn't like any of the characters........and yes, it is a similar story to Crimes & Misdemeanors.

I think Allen hinted at the beginning that this film had something to do with Dostoyevsky (sp?) Crime and Punishment dealt with some of the film's issues.

The only humor in the film was provided by the mother in law maybe twice. Well.......I read that he is making his current film in London also..........

Earl,

You're right, he did break the rules. What's so impressive is that he realizes this and gives back the everlasting gobstopper.

I like "Cheer Up Charlie" a lot, but it isn't staged right. She should sing it to Charlie, rather than sitting alone as he walks alone.

And the teacher was one of the best. "Of course you don't know! If you knew the answer and I didn't you'd be teaching me instead of my teachin you. And for a young boy to teach a grown man is presumptuous and rude."

Earl & Ghulam -

I haven't seen Au Revoir, les Enfants in over fifteen years, but it's one of the most moving films I've ever seen. Ebert's article hits the nail on the head. I'd known that it was a story from Malle's life, but I didn't know it was autobiographical to such an extent; how haunting for him. It definitely deserves it's place on Ebert's Greatest list, yet I don't know that I could watch it again, at least not alone.

Thanks for the link.

I finally rented "I Heart Huckabees." What a disaster. I haven't seen a movie I've disliked this much in a long time.
Such a promising cast (even Isabelle Huppert) wasted.
I did a search for past comments. Seems they were pretty mixed - so maybe I just didn't get it. Well, I did like the diagram on the blackboard.
I don't think I've ever liked Jason Schwartzman (sp) in anything - so maybe that's part of it.

Nobody sits like this rock sits. You rock, rock. The rock just sits and is. You show us how to just sit here and that's what we need.

mo--I hate Huckabees even more than you do. And Marantz does too! So you're far from alone.

There's no rationalizing taste in comedy. Either you find it funny or not. Having said that, I can't comprehend people finding this movie unfunny. It's maybe the most genuinely off-beat comedy since Beat the Devil . But maybe you didn't find that funny, either...

Now that you mention it, I have never quite understood the cult for Beat the Devil, which I find fitfully amusing but nowhere near the hoot it's said to be by those who adore it. (To give credit where credit is due, BTD includes the only Jennifer Jones performance that I can abide.)

However, just to confirm my own postmodern "camp" credentials, I will go to any wall you suggest for Beyond the Valley of the Dolls.
