Match Point was an excellent screenplay. Light as air? Hardly.

Wonder why the adultery didn't bother you here, and yet for other films it seems to be a requirement for never viewing.

Loved this review, Marilyn. Not having seen the movie, I can't add my two cents. But I'm closer to seeing it now than I've ever been.

Marilyn--I agree. You are the first critic I've read who praises Showgirls with any credibility. You've made me want to see it again.

I see Match Point has been discussed recently. I just happened to rent it over the weekend. Something about it didn't sit well with me. Maybe it was the location, or the way the accents delivered the dialogue but this movie seemed like anyone else could have directed it and it would have been the same movie. I guess I felt like the movie lacked Allen's touch, even the script seemed muted by normal Allen standards. The only thing I really liked was looking at Johansson, she was freakin' hot in this movie. Also did anyone else notice the similarities between this movie and Crimes and Misdemeanors?

I seem to have been misunderstood about the adultery things. It's when adultery is handled in a sympathetic or justified way (I'm talking about in a decent marriage, not an abusive or loveless one) that I can't tolerate.

SPOILER MATCHPLAY

In Matchplay, the adulterer is made out to be a scum and he is.

Thanks for calling me a critic. That made my day.

That review read like the work of a critic. Congratulations. And again, I've read a lot of people who praise Showgirls, but it always sounds like a "this is the most deliciously campy thang" deal. You actually make a case for the movie being on some level...um...good.

DITTO! Which is why I always felt (Fatal Attraction) that Michael Douglas DESERVED what he got.

I did like Match Point. He may have gotten away with it. But he did some suffering along the way.

More like insufferable acting.

We'll have to agree to disagree about this one ehle. I thought his character was supposed to be insufferable, so he did it very well.

I especially loved everything just about falling apart at the end.

If we're talking about Jonathan Rhys Meyers, I thought he did a great job.

You made it sound interesting, Shane. If I ever get caught up on the stack of unwatched movies that is staring at me aqccusingly, I'll have to give it a try.
