"Over and Over Again" is one of my all time favorite songs in one of Rodgers and Hart's best scores. And there is one moment in Billy Rose's Jumbo which never fails to crack me up no matter how often I see it. It is when some men are taking invententory (for lack of a better expression)and they run into Jimmy Durante walking with Jumbo. One of them says, "Stop. Stop that elephant!" Jimmy Durante standing directly in front of Jumbo says, "What Elephant?"
Maybe you just have to see it. |

Just wanted to mention I'm now addicted to Stephen Chiao/Chow (depending on version) movies. I've seen From Beijing with Love and The God of Cookery already, and the "extended version" of Shaolin Soccer should show up any day now...
I think I'll find some copies for my sister. She might actually like this. |

"The Weather Man" was much better than I expected and Nicolas Cage is very good at these roles. The movie is structured almost identically to "Lord Of War" even if the content and characters are different.
"Capote" was above average and forgettable, I'm sad to say. |

Me too. I've seen all of the above, and also The King of Comedy, which is lesser Chow, but still has its moments. And don't forget Kung Fu Hustle, Chow's best film to date, which is great fun. Sister Wakasa might like it. |

Yes!!!!!! Couldn't agree more. The Weather Man is going to be surprising a lot of skeptics like me who (much as we would like to deny this fact) are very swayed by what we read from critics and by box office success. The Weather Man got extremely mixed reviews (the bad ones were poisonous) and tanked at the box office. Nonetheless, as a DVD viewing proves, it's a very, very good film--with a marvelous performance by Cage. |

The Weather Man
McBain/Billy's posts on this are exactly why I look in at this website from time to time. Yes, I was swayed by reviews, synopsis, and trailers that all gave me the distinct feeling that the film was a stinkorama.
Once upon a time, about nine years ago, I had a similar review-induced feeling about a film called The Big Lebowski. |

I liked it a lot. The most cynical mainstream movie since Fight Club (not that it's that good, mind you.) |

I found it not so much "cynical" as "clear-eyed." Judge for yourselves. I think the ending of the movie can serve as a litmus test of sorts. In any case, The Weather Man is well worth seeing. |

Funny, in light of our discussion of Sharon Stone, Mahnolia Dargis and appearance.
Last night I was watching Terms of Endearment with a friend, and near the end of the movie she remarked, "I miss actresses from the 80s. No fear of looking not beautiful, no botox or plastic surgery. Just really good acting."
She was referring to Debra Winger, but I'm sure others were on her mind as well. |

After getting used to Debra Winger's voice (which wasn't easy), I found I really enjoyed her performances. |

Winger's voice I found kind of sexy, actually. No prob getting used to it.
Maybe that's one of those "a suggestion of masculine within the feminine heightens the attraction" things, like the Mona Lisa actually being based on Leonardo's face or whatever, or the tug that some men feel for Jennifer Garner. |

I love her voice and I'm sorry she never became a bigger star although she had a reputation for being extremely difficult (which hasn't stopped other stars from getting to the top). I loved her in the movie [brain fart here with name ] she made with Redford about opposing lawyers with Darryl Hannah. I know it got panned and I msut be the only person who likes it but it's great for a sleepless night or rainy day or any day where you want to put your brains on hold. Sneakers is another one for a rainy day with Redford and Mary McConnell, another actress I love.
For quick pick ups I love Charade and How to Steal a Million. Never fail to make me laugh. But then, Audrey Hepburn is spectacular and managed to have chemistry with all her leading men. |

Her sandpaper voice was really weird to me at first. Especially around the time of An Officer and a Gentleman. She sounded like she was getting over a sore throat (that's not meant as a crack, either; I had a similar problem the first few times I saw Harvey Fierstein). Once I got used to it, I appreciated how distinctive it was. |
